Position Title: Paralegal

Position Summary: Research, investigate facts, working with clients regarding substance abuse treatment, preparing motions, appeals, and legal arguments. Draft legal briefs, pleadings and appeals. Provide clerical support as needed. Paralegal support to department attorneys that represent indigent persons in various types of cases, i.e. criminal, CHINS, termination of parental rights, and appeal, etc.

Qualifications: High School diploma or GED required. Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or related field preferred. Knowledge of legal terminology and standard legal procedures/practices, and ability to make practical application of federal, state, and local laws governing criminal procedures, ability to become certified and operate Indiana Data and Communications Systems (IDACS) and National Crime Information Center (NCIC) computer system; working knowledge (or ability to obtain a working knowledge) of federal, state and local laws and rules of evidence; ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing; ability to maintain confidentiality with regard to investigations, departmental records, and internal policies and procedures; ability to serve the public with diplomacy and respect, including occasional encounters with irate/hostile persons; possession of a valid Indiana driver’s license.

Commitment to indigent criminal defense. Computer literacy, minimum typing 60 WPM, knowledge of standard legal procedures, successfully pass a post offer drug screen and criminal history background check. Ability to work with minimum supervision and in a team environment. Previous experience helpful.

Starting Salary and Hours: $53,207.00 (unless applicant has prior full-time Monroe County work experience), position is 40-hours / week, M-F 8am to 5pm
