About the Role

Monarch Machine and Tool Inc is looking for a skilled and detail-oriented Steel Estimator/Drafter to join our team. In this position, you will prepare accurate cost estimates, material takeoffs, shop drawings, and fabrication details for structural and miscellaneous steel projects. You will work closely with customers, project managers, engineers, fabricators, and field personnel to ensure every project is accurately estimated, clearly detailed, and efficiently produced.

Key Responsibilities

Estimating

• Review architectural, structural, and engineering drawings, specifications, and project documents
• Prepare accurate material takeoffs for structural and miscellaneous steel
• Develop detailed estimates covering labor, materials, fabrication, equipment, subcontracting, finishing, and installation
• Solicit and evaluate material pricing
• Identify project requirements, exclusions, potential risks, and scope discrepancies
• Prepare competitive bids and proposals within required deadlines
• Communicate with customers, general contractors, engineers, and vendors to clarify requirements
• Assist with change-order pricing and project cost analysis
• Maintain organized estimating files and historical pricing data

Steel Drafting

• Produce accurate shop and fabrication drawings for structural and miscellaneous steel
• Develop piece marks, material lists, weld details, connection details, dimensions, and erection information
• Review drawings for accuracy, constructability, and compliance with project specifications
• Coordinate details with engineers, architects, fabricators, and project managers
• Incorporate revisions and respond to RFIs and engineering comments
• Ensure drawings are complete and ready for fabrication and field installation

Qualifications

• Strong understanding of structural and miscellaneous steel fabrication and erection
• Ability to read and interpret drawings (Architectural, Structural, Mechanical, Shop Drawings, etc.)
• Knowledge of steel materials, shapes, connections, welding, fabrication processes, and erection practices
• Proficiency with CAD software
• Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
• Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with a project team

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in steel estimating, detailing, fabrication, or a related field
• Experience estimating structural steel projects from plans and specifications
• Experience producing fabrication and erection drawings
• Familiarity with AISC standards and structural steel practices
• Experience with steel estimating software or construction management systems
• Knowledge of CNC fabrication, material optimization, and shop production processes
• Previous experience working directly with general contractors, engineers, and steel fabricators
