Job Summary
Directs, supervises, and coordinates functions and activities in phlebotomy, lab assisting and specimen receiving. Assists laboratory management in the day-to-day operation of the laboratory
Responsibilities
Organizes, directs and supervises activities in the phlebotomy and specimen receiving areas. Establishes routines and work flow patterns, performance standards and staffing needs. Assists in interviews of potential employees, trains/orients phlebotomy and lab assistant staff, evaluates performance, provides guidance for improving performance and makes recommendations for personnel actions. Assists Lab Manager with disciplinary action when necessary. Develops and maintains policies and procedures for specimen collection and specimen receiving. Develops criteria for and ensures ongoing phlebotomy training and education for Davis Memorial Hospital and outside facilities. Prepares work schedules, assigns personnel, evaluates work for phlebotomy and specimen receiving staff. Takes call, covers shifts, and/or ensures adequate staffing is available when there are call-offs. Serves as the primary laboratory resource for coding and compliance issues and miscellaneous charges and credits Assists laboratory management in special projects. Performs payroll functions for phlebotomy staff. Provides back up payroll coverage for department. Responsible for the accurate and efficient services provided by specimen receiving, including registration, order entry and specimen collection. Ensures PKU’s are processed, sent out and reported timely. Performs phlebotomy and Chain of Custody drug test collection when required. Assists with continued compliance and staff education for DOT drug screen collections and shipping infectious substances. Ensures Joint Commission readiness in all phlebotomy areas and specimen receiving. Maintains an adequate inventory of supplies. Assists with care and maintenance of department equipment and supplies. Keeps Lab Manager updated with daily concerns. Performs daily status with lab assistants and reports back to Lab Manager. Participates in The Davis Way activities and supports TDW efforts with staff. Facilitates as needed. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient ranging from newborn to geriatric Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, supports quality assessment and performance improvement processes, adheres to safety, environmental and infection control standards. Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops. Attends meetings as required. Performs other duties as assigned.

Previous phlebotomy experience Previous experience in the health care field in related work 2 years supervisory experience preferred Good interpersonal skills Ability to communicate clearly orally and written
