The Department of Learning and Engagement at The Museum of Modern Art supports the Museum’s founding educational mission to ensure that people of all ages and abilities “enjoy, understand and use” the art of our time in ways that add value to their lives. The department collaborates across the organization to empower a diverse public to form their own interpretations and connections to art by telling stories, asking questions, actively making and participating in the artistic process, and offering and listening to multiple perspectives. Programs offered by the department range from talks and lectures to artist-driven activations, online courses, studio programs, facilitated gallery explorations, workshops, publications and more.

Position summary:

The Museum of Modern Art is currently accepting applications for a Manager, Public Engagement (Scaled Programs and Events) to lead the conception, planning, and production of MoMA’s highest-volume public programs and events—initiatives designed to welcome the broadest possible audiences into the Museum and connect them meaningfully with the art of our time. Working across Learning and Engagement, this role is responsible for contributing to and/or developing and delivering scaled offerings such as UNIQLO Free Friday Nights, late-night programs, family festivals, large public talks, performance activations, and seasonal programs that serve thousands of visitors. The Manager will conceive, collaborate on, and produce events that catalyze meaningful encounters with art for first-time visitors, families, students, and longtime members alike, with a focus on inclusion, accessibility, and operational excellence at scale.


The Manager will manage and provide guidance to staff, including Coordinators, Associate Educators, and Assistant Educators, as part of a team to design, coordinate, implement, and facilitate scaled public programs and events that provide impactful experiences, attract new audiences, and engender critical conversations. This position will report to and work closely with the Director, Public Engagement to identify and manage potential community-based partnerships that align to this work at the Museum, including strengthening and expanding partnerships with cultural organizations, civic agencies, and audience networks across the New York area.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • With Deputy Director Learning and Engagement, Director, Public Engagement, Marketing and Membership develop and continually refine a strategic framework for the delivery of scaled public programs and events at the Museum.
  • Lead the development and programming for the monthly program series “Artist Parties” including identifying artists, DJs, performers to activate the museum between the hours of 7–11pm.
  • Develop and cultivate an extensive network of artists, performers, facilitators, and musicians that align with the Artist Party series.
  • Direct end-to-end production and on-site execution of scaled events, including run-of-show planning, staffing, vendor coordination, AV and production needs, accessibility provisions, and audience flow across multiple Museum venues working with curators, marketing and communications, visitor experience, security, and facilities, to effectively and professionally deliver the program.
  • Directly supervise Coordinator supporting scaled programs and work laterally and as a line supervisor with other staff including Associate Educator(s), and Assistant Educator(s) in their execution of program. 
  • Navigate a fast-paced programming environment by making decisions and solving problems to support the needs of audiences, artists, and staff, often in real time during live events.
  • Analyze results of audience research, attendance data, and visitor demographics in strategizing how to best serve the MoMA community and grow engagement among priority audiences.
  • Ensure operational excellence in processes and systems; establish operations that represent best practices and provide seamless experiences for partner departments and audiences; evaluate existing processes and systems on an ongoing and regular basis to align with the changing needs of high-volume programming.
  • Provides monthly and other reports and statistics as requested, provides information and support for grant applications and advancement initiatives, and participates in institutional planning/initiatives.
  • Create budgets and track expenses, oversee ongoing financial operations and reporting, ensuring that the organization operates within budget and fiscal guidelines and policies.
  • Negotiate artist, performer, and vendor agreements in partnership with Legal and Finance.
  • Writes copy for brochures and website promotions.
  • Perform any other duties reasonably related to the functions described above.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience, plus 5 years in production management for live events, theatrical productions, broadcast/media capture, or touring productions, including staff management
  • Strong working knowledge of theatrical and event production standards across lighting, audio, projections, video, and rigging, with familiarity in virtual and hybrid event workflows
  • Demonstrated ability to manage budgets, vendor relationships, and multiple overlapping productions across venues and formats (in-person, hybrid, virtual)
  • Proficiency with Google Suite, Microsoft Office Suite, and digital presentation/production platforms including Zoom, vMix, familiarity with project management and ticketing/CRM platforms (e.g., Asana, Airtable, Tessitura) preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Able to work well and collaborate effectively with a wide range of audiences, including staff, educators, artists, funders, sponsors, members, general public, and other constituencies.
  • Demonstrated commitment to values of diversity, inclusion, accessibility, and learner-centered interpretation strategies.
  • Experience supervising personnel, program and budget development, project management, and planning skills along with an ability to meet deadlines are necessary.
  • Able to work effectively in a team setting within the department and collaborate across the organization.
  • Must be available to work evenings, weekends, and occasional holidays as required by the program calendar.

Salary range: This position pays a range of 90-100K per annum.

Position Type: This is a fixed-term 2 year contract position.
