Molecular Pathology Laboratory Network, Inc. (MPLN) is a privately held, College of American Pathologists, New York State Department of Health and ISO15189 accredited molecular diagnostic laboratory specializing in oncology, infectious disease testing, women's health testing and a growing clinical trials business.
MPLN is seeking a qualified Laboratory Technician or Technologist to join our dynamic Histology/Flow Cytometry team.
General Summary of Position
For histology: prepares histologic and immunohistochemistry slides from clinical and research tissues and cells for microscopic examination and diagnosis by pathologist.
For flow cytometry: responsible for processing samples, setting up and running assays (Leukemia/Lymphoma Immunophenotyping, PNH, and Geneuity specific assays) on the cytometer.
For both sections: perform routine preventive laboratory maintenance, monitor quality and document actions/findings.
Main Areas of Responsibility in Histology
- Performs IHC staining based on established antibody datasheets and TOPs.
- Possesses basic lab math/titration knowledge and pipetting skills.
- Performs general Special Stains including H&E, PAS, trichromes, Congo Red, etc.
- Embeds tissue as specified by pathologist for correct orientation.
- Sections tissue according to established protocols for specimen/testing type.
- Enters patient and test information into database system.
- Performs preventive, periodic and corrective maintenance on instrumentation per established protocols.
- Uses good customer service techniques, with both clients and coworkers.
- Works well with others in a team environment.
- Possesses familiarity of medical terminology, computer literacy, and automated immunohistochemistry equipment operation.
Main Areas of Responsibility in Flow Cytometry
· Reviews orders (requisitions and other submitted documentation), and sample labeling, assesses adequacy of sample, research case history, resolves unclear or conflicting information and selects appropriate panel.
· Triages caseload (monitors pending logs, assesses workload, prioritizes and collaborates with the flow team as to the distribution of workload).
· Processes samples: including cell counts, viability assessments, tissue disaggregation, smear preparations, morphological review, concentration or dilution of samples and documentation of findings on flow worksheet.
· Sets up assays, including sample and reagent pipetting, staining, lysing, washing and preparing for acquisition.
· Performs instrument preventive maintenance and operate instrument, including start-up, shut-down, quality checks, worklist set-up, data acquisition optimization and instrument troubleshooting.
Qualifications
Degree in Biology or related field with at least 60 semester hours, or equivalent, including either:
· 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses.
or
· 24 semester hours of science courses that include –
- 6 semester hours of chemistry.
- 6 semester hours of biology and
- 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination.
- Valid ASCP certification preferred
- At least one year of clinical laboratory experience preferred
The work schedule for this position is 1st shift with rotating Saturdays and rotating holiday on call.
