The Park Superintendent offers a unique, hands-on opportunity to work and live in Mohave County's Hualapai Mountain Park.

Park Superintendent -> Starting salary Range 18 Step 1-8, $ $33.12/hr.

Scheduled hours could vary depending on departmental seasonal events needs.

Schedule does involve being "On-Call" which would include weekends and holidays.

Must pass drug screen post offer.

May be assigned to act as Parks Administrator in his/her absence.

Work on Parks Special Events and the Mohave County Fair.

On-site residency may be required with housing provided.

Must be able to travel throughout different county locations. Working conditions would include but are not limited to:

  • Work does require traveling throughout the county while operating and handling a motor vehicle in adverse traffic conditions, weather, terrain, and altitudes ranging anywhere from 541 feet to up approximately 8,500 feet.

  • Work outdoors performing moderate to strenuous manual labor in varying weather conditions, including strong winds, extreme heat to extreme cold temperatures.

  • Possible exposure to smoke and heat due to the performance of firefighting activities.
  • Involves exposure to exhaust and chemical fumes, oil, grease, hazardous materials, and loud noises from equipment.
  • The ability to frequently be able to lift 25lbs up to 150lbs or more while operating heavy equipment.
  • This position requires an equal amount of time spent standing, walking, sitting, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, twisting, bending, climbing ladders, confined spaces, and tree trimming.

Essential Job Functions

  • Supervises, coordinates and performs a variety of administrative staff work such as: scheduling; cash handling; customer service; maintaining records; preventative maintenance; responding to requests for information or services; preparing correspondence, reports, statistical information and budget materials; and assisting in the development of policies, procedures and training.
  • Completes performance evaluations; may make hiring recommendations; recommends disciplinary actions; approves vacations and time off; prepares work schedules and assignments; supervises the activities of assigned personnel; monitors reports and recordkeeping activities filed by assigned personnel for completeness, accuracy, and adherence to policy and procedure guidelines; instructs personnel in departmental policies, procedures and techniques; and provides training.
  • Conducts and/or arranges for training and development programs for park staff.
  • Attends meetings and conferences in conjunction with other local agencies.
  • Assists in performing various skilled and unskilled park maintenance activities to include, but not limited to, trash cleanup, restroom cleanup, landscaping and turf care, cabin / vacation home and recreational area clean up, snow removal, tree trimming, electrical wiring, plumbing, and construction.
  • Operates a variety of mechanical equipment and hand tools during the performance of maintenance activities.
  • Assists in performing various skilled and unskilled park maintenance activities to include, but not limited to, trash cleanup, restroom cleanup, cabin and recreational area clean up, snow removal, tree trimming, electrical wiring, plumbing, and construction.
  • Operates a variety of mechanical equipment and hand tools during the performance of maintenance activities.
  • Assures a safe, clean, well-maintained park facility through the efforts of a properly supervised and trained staff.
  • Provides an efficient operation that stays within budget constraints which assures fiscal control and accountability.
  • Analyzes financial information and operational requirements in order to plan, prepare and manage the park's operating budget.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • Performs special assignments as requested.

As assigned to Hualapai Mountain Park:

  • Oversees fire mitigation, historic preservation, and natural resource projects in the Park.
  • Responsible for the trail maintenance projects in the Park.

Minimum Qualifications


Required Minimum Education, Experience, and Training:

  • High School Diploma/ GED (General Education Degree).
  • Five (5) years of increasingly responsible park operations or natural resources administration experience.
  • One (1) year supervisory experience.
  • An equivalent combination of experience, education and training which provides the desired knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered in meeting the minimum requirements.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in park administration management, recreation, hospitality and tourism management, natural resources, or related field is desirable.
  • Certified Parks and Recreation Professional
  • Certification as a law enforcement officer by the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Certification (AZPOST) Board.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Principles, practices, methods, techniques, and equipment used in enforcement of park operations, maintenance and security.
  • Principles, practices, methods, and techniques used in business management, cash handling, and customer service in park and hospitality services.
  • Relevant laws, rules and regulations pertaining to law enforcement in general and specifically to the park operations.
  • Occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions applicable to parks operation and general maintenance work.
  • Principles of providing leadership, supervision, training and evaluation for park staff.
  • First aid methods and procedures.

  • Safe and effective operation and maintenance of law enforcement equipment to include firearms.

  • Safe operation and handling of a motor vehicle in adverse traffic conditions, weather, terrain and high-speed driving.
  • Communicating and maintaining professionalism with the public, co-workers, and work contacts.

  • Protect the public and enforce the laws in a park with due regard for the rights and safety of individuals, the preservation of property, and the maintenance of good community and interpersonal relationships in compliance with established laws, policies, procedures and regulations.

  • Apply training, experience and common sense to identify potentially dangerous situations, to make effective logical decisions, and to exercise the appropriate measure of tact or force to resolve dangerous or emotionally charged situations with minimum injury to self and others and minimum damage to property involved.
  • Set priorities, assign, schedule, train, supervise and evaluate work activities and to persuade assigned personnel effectively.
  • Maintain safe and efficient parks operations.
  • Plan, assign and supervise the work of subordinates.
  • Plan and proactively manage business activities, cash handling, and customer service.
  • Make decisions in accordance with established policies and regulations.
  • Comprehend, retain and recall factual information.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrate moral character, honesty, tact, fairness, lack of prejudice and desire to help when dealing with people.
  • Retain control of a vehicle under emergency conditions.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with associate personnel, other law enforcement agencies and the public.
  • Prepare accurate, complete and legible reports and to present detailed, accurate and objective oral statements and responses to questions.
