Summary
Under the direction of an Environmental Services Supervisor, Hazardous Waste Technician II is responsible for removing all waste streams (trash, biohazardous and chemotherapy waste, soiled linen, recycling, etc.) from the facility to specific collection areas. This position performs a variety of duties that support the department in maintaining a clean environment for patients and staff.
Minimum Experience Required
- Two (2) years’ experience in the following:
- Healthcare, Environmental Services, customer service, janitorial, or hospitality.
- Ability to follow basic oral/written instructions in English (for the safety of our patients and staff in an emergency)

- Average quality score of 90% in the previous 12 months
- Successful completion of all competencies over a rolling 12 month period
Essential Function
- Safely remove and transport infectious/non-infectious waste including medical, hazardous, municipal, recycling, and linen from the facility to specified collection areas
- Follow an appropriate schedule to ensure timeliness of waste and soiled linen removal throughout the facility
- Maintain cleanliness of the loading dock, trash compactor area, and trash containers - Push and pull heavy linen and waste carts throughout the facility
- Move furniture and other items from patient care hallways to maintain proper egress - Setup and breakdown of tables and chairs for meetings and events
- Complete working knowledge of communicable diseases, blood-borne pathogens, isolation standards and transmission-based precautions, chain of infection, hand hygiene to ensure patient safety. -Chemical dwell times -Isolation differentiation
- Proper operation of cleaning equipment- Properly clean and disinfect all types of areas including clinical inpatient/outpatient (patient rooms, exam rooms, nurse stations, etc.), support/common areas, offices, labs, conference rooms, elevators, stairwells, corridors, external grounds, etc.
- Complete working knowledge of appropriate PPE -Proper disinfection and cleaning of patient care are -Complete working knowledge of standard precautions
- Handle and dispose of medical waste and sharps observing all required precautions, including properly tying and labeling bags
- Use proper chemicals, tools, and equipment for each situation
- Clean spills containing blood or other potentially infectious material using established infection control, safety, and ES departmental procedures
- Complete other duties as assigned
