Data Scientist / AI Engineer - Senior Level

Moffatt & Nichol specializes in large complex waterfront infrastructure projects and is recognized as one of the worldwide leaders in this field. We are actively looking for a Data Scientist / AI Engineer to join our Nextport team.  As part of the Nextport Group, the Data Scientist uses large data sets to find opportunities for simulation products, data analytics and process optimization. Uses a variety of data mining/data analysis methods, using a variety of data tools, building and implementing models, using/creating algorithms and creating/running simulations.

Duties and responsibilities:

• Design, build, and deploy advanced ML/AI models for operational efficiency, prediction, and optimization in port and logistics environments
• Work with large-scale datasets using Databricks and Delta Lakes
• Research & Innovation: Stay on top of the latest trends in AI and machine learning. Continuously explore new methodologies, tools, and techniques to push the boundaries of what AI can achieve
• Explore, fine-tune, and operationalize LLMs to power AI agents, decision-support tools, and conversational analytics
• Model Deployment & Integration: Implement AI models into production environments and ensure smooth integration with existing systems and workflows. Monitor model performance and make iterative improvements
• Collaborate with data engineers, product managers, and business stakeholders to translate business challenges into data-driven solutions
• Contribute to code quality, testing, and CI/CD practices through GitLab and Dockerized environments

Qualifications:

• 5 years of professional experience in Data Science / AI Engineer
• Programming Languages: Proficiency in Python and PySpark. Strong experience with machine learning libraries and frameworks such as TensorFlow, Keras, PyTorch, Scikit-learn, or similar
• Hands-on experience with Databricks 
• Knowledge of LLMs (fine-tuning, RAG, prompt engineering, embeddings)
• Experience with agentic AI frameworks (LangChain, LlamaIndex, Haystack, or equivalent)
• Experience with real-time or streaming architectures (Kafka or similar)
• Solid understanding of data modeling, feature engineering, and ML lifecycle
• Experience in GitLab (version control, CI/CD pipelines)
• Strong analytical mindset, problem-solving skills, and ability to communicate complex ideas to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
• Product-oriented experience
• Familiarity with Docker for reproducible environments
• Background in agile methodologies
• Exposure to maritime, logistics, or transportation domains
• Official certifications in Databricks, Azure Cloud

Working conditions:

Sedentary for prolonged period of time, interact with clients, and travel occasionally.
