Summary: Assists the teacher as directed in the delivery of services to children with various special education designations.
Required Education-Certificates-Experience: Minimum of 49 college semester hours preferred or have passed the approved WorkKeys Assessment Skills Test (offered at the Craig Workforce Center). Experience working with children, data collection skills, ability for follow direction, flexible, positive, works well with kids and a team, professional.
Responsibilities:
Under the guidance and direction of the classroom teacher and/or special education teacher the paraprofessional might perform one or more of the following:
- Assure that students learn at their own level and have their specialized needs met
- Assist in teaching students how to become independent and responsible at school
- Assist in planning and implementing teaching and learning strategies for special education students to meet their academic, social, emotional, behavioral, physical, motor, communication, and other needs.
- Collect or gather data
- Document student progress
- Run small learning groups
- Prepare or set up activities and materials for the next rotation, period or day, help students with self-care tasks
- Monitor students during class, transitions, lunch or breaks
- Providing instructional support individually or in small groups;
- Providing one-on-one instruction
- Meet with teachers
- Provide accommodations for students to have access to classroom instruction
- Modifying materials
- Implementing behavior management plans as directed
- Other duties may be assigned.
Qualification Requirements: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Language Skills: Ability to read, write and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in a one-on-one and small groups situation to students, staff, parents and administrators.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents and community; ability to speak clear and concisely in written or oral communication.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to run; stoop and kneel. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50lbs. The employee must occasionally push items of 75lbs. or more, such as pushing children on a bike or moving/rearranging furniture. Specific vision abilities required by this include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception.
