Job Summary
Assist with the presentation of learning materials and instructional exercises. Tutor individual students and small groups of students with special learning needs to reinforce and follow up learning and training activities. Monitor and assist students with special learning needs in drill, practice, and study activities as a follow-up to the presentation of instructional lessons. Direct students in safe learning and play activities and functions, and assist in shaping appropriate social behaviors. Assist in the management of student behavior through the use of positive reinforcement strategies and other appropriate techniques. Assist in the preparation of a variety of instructional materials and learning aids geared toward the instructional level of children with special needs. May be required to collect data and maintain a variety of records and files, including confidential student records and medical information. Operate or assist students in the operation of a variety of instructional aides, media, and computer assisted instruction. Monitor and assist in the remediation of specific learning problems and conditions. May assist with personal needs, including; feeding, toileting, changing, showering, diapering, pushing a wheelchair, assist in standing program, loading and unloading students on school bus or van. May administer medication in accordance with specific medical instruction and may provide medical support as per student care plan. Perform first aid, which may include aiding children experiencing seizures or respiratory disorders. Observe and monitor children with physical disabilities and request appropriate assistance for pupil experiencing physical distress. Maintain or assist in maintaining and orderly, attractive, and positive learning environment. Provide a variety of skill-building activities for students who experience learning challenges. Requirements / Qualifications
High School diploma or GED. AA degree, or 48 college units, or pass CODESP test. Any combination of successful qualifying experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and skill. A typical way to meet this requirement would be one year paid or volunteer experience working with children of various ages in a learning environment. Valid California driver’s license. Training or coursework in child growth and development, special education, instructional technology, or a closely related field is preferred. Bilingual in English and Spanish desired. Placement as Preschool Instructional Assistant requires completion of 6 semester units of ECE course work within 12 months of placement. Food Handler Permit may be required.
