Lead Software Engineer

Are you an experienced developer gun, who can crank out code whilst having your eye on the big picture when it comes to product development and leading a team of developers? Do you want to escape constraints and micromanagement in your job? Want to work with a team that will trust and empower you to do the best work of your life? Expand your skills and career at the same pace as a rapidly growing startup?

If the above resonates with you, read on!

What we’re looking for: We’re searching for a standout engineering leader—someone with serious systems and infrastructure capability and the communication and people skills to inspire, grow, and engage a high-performing team. You’ll refine how we deliver, elevate our sprint practices, and work directly with the leadership group to shape our technical future. For the right person, this role is a clear pathway toward a future CTO position.

Compensation: $130,000 - 140,000 per year, depending on experience and fit for the role (if applying, please be prepared to accept an offer within this range).

Location: Remote, must be based in the US, with the right to work in the US.

As a team, we value Innovation, Customer Satisfaction, Transparency, Collaboration and Excellence. You’ll have the autonomy to solve problems in the way that you see best while collaborating with a team focused on delivering high-quality and high-impact solutions for our customers. You will be joining a small team with a purpose and enjoy startup flexibility—work from home and a schedule outside of team and customer meetings that doesn’t have to fit within the M-F 9-5.

We have team members in Colorado, California, Florida, Connecticut, Kentucky, Illinois, Michigan and Australia.

How you’ll make an impact:

You will be responsible for making an impact on both back-end and front-end development work whilst embedding yourself as a leader in our small but growing team of developers. You will work directly under our VP of Technology.

Team and company-wide responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the broader leadership team
  • Drive our Engineering practices from Strategy/OKRs through Sprints
  • Have an opinion about the direction of the product
  • Bring ideas and solutions to the table. The “old way” is not always the “right way.”
  • Have a material role in wider team discussions, speaking up where you see value

Engineering responsibilities:

  • The hands-on part of the role is around 75% backend/infra, 25% frontend
  • Work closely with other developers to deliver the roadmap, plus minor features and bugs
  • Work closely with our UX&D to tightly align customer value to engineering effort
  • Plan and implement solution design across all Modii products
  • Build data models to meet business needs & expose them to our frontend applications via REST APIs

What you’ll bring

  • 5 years of experience with server-side technologies (we use Python and GoLang)
  • Strong grasp of relational databases (PostgreSQL). Bonus points if you’ve worked with GIS data in relational databases
  • Comfortable working with Typescript or other strongly typed languages
  • Strong grasp of frontend reactive frameworks (React, Vue, Angular, Svelt, etc), as well as state-management libraries (Redux, Vuex, etc)
  • Comfortable working with various application protocols (REST, GraphQL, Protobuf, WebSockets)
  • Comfortable working with remote access (SSH) and cloud environments (AWS, Google Cloud, Heroku, etc)
  • Comfortable working with VCS (Git)
  • An understanding of HTTP/Websocket request lifecycles
  • Experience with Agile/Scrum
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment
  • Relentless appetite for knowledge as well as personal and professional growth
  • Initiative to identify and take steps to keep development work moving and follow-up as necessary with the VP of Technology and Scrum Master.
  • Cross-functional collaboration to listen and understand the different priorities of each internal team member you work with.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Time management to keep dev work on track, working with our Scrum Master to ensure all developers have what they need to stay productive.
  • Willingness to learn to welcome feedback as an opportunity for personal growth and improved performance (we want your feedback, too!).
  • Communication and active listening.
  • Problem-solving.

Meeting schedules:

While we encourage flexible schedules, we ask for flexibility from our team members considering Modii’s and our customers’ various time zones. Customer meetings take priority, but internal meetings can be arranged as they suit the schedules of each individual involved.

Compensation and benefits, we’re proud to offer:

  • Salary range: $130,000 - 140,000 per year, depending on experience and fit for the role (if applying, please be prepared to accept an offer within this range)
  • Company stock options
  • 401(k) matching up to 4%
  • $1,500 reimbursable expenses to use toward home office set up
  • Home internet allowance of up to $70/month
  • Health, dental and vision insurance
  • Health savings account
  • Flexible schedule/workday
  • Flexible paid time off
  • Growth and advancement opportunities within Modii as the team grows
  • You will have the ability (and will be encouraged) to contribute to the strategy and direction of the products and business as a whole
  • Opportunity to speak with additional team members outside of the interview process once an offer is made
