About ModernRugs

Founded in 1999, ModernRugs was among the first companies to bring rugs to the internet. What began as an online retailer has evolved into a custom rug design studio, shaped over more than two decades by the architects, interior designers, developers, and procurement teams who challenged us to create what couldn't be found elsewhere.

Today, we partner with leading architecture and interior design firms to develop made-to-order rugs for hospitality, workplace, retail, healthcare, luxury residential, and cultural environments.

Every project begins somewhere different: a drawing, photograph, material, architectural detail, historic reference, color story, or completely original idea.

Our job is to discover what it can become.

Behind that work is a global network of artisans and manufacturing partners we've worked alongside for decades. ModernRugs is entering a new creative chapter, and we're looking for a designer excited to help shape it.

The Role

We're looking for a Designer — Custom Rugs & Textiles with a strong visual instinct, technical curiosity, positive energy, and genuine excitement about turning ideas into physical objects.

You'll work at the creative center of our custom process, collaborating closely with clients, project managers, leadership, and manufacturing partners to take projects from initial inspiration through design development, sampling, and production.

Some clients arrive with highly developed artwork. Others send us a photograph, material, sketch, architectural reference, or loose idea and invite us to explore. Your role is to understand the intention, find the creative opportunity, and develop a compelling design that can ultimately be made.

You'll create original artwork, explore composition and color, develop renderings, presentations, and proposals, prepare production-ready files, review samples, and work closely with project management as each idea moves toward production.

Technical knowledge grows with experience.

Bring us the eye, curiosity, and energy. We'll teach you rugs.

What You'll Do

  • Develop original custom rug designs and interpret client artwork, references, and inspiration
  • Translate architecture, interiors, materials, photographs, and visual references into compelling design directions
  • Create artwork, digital renderings, color studies, presentations, and client-facing design materials
  • Explore composition, pattern, texture, scale, and color
  • Prepare accurate production artwork and specifications for sampling and manufacturing
  • Partner closely with project managers to align creative development with client needs, budgets, schedules, approvals, and production milestones
  • Find creative solutions within material, construction, performance, budget, and timeline parameters
  • Review samples, strike-offs, yarn colors, and production materials and guide refinements toward final approval
  • Collaborate with global manufacturing partners to translate design intent into construction, material, color, pile, and finishing decisions
  • Develop deep working knowledge of fibers, weaving techniques, manufacturing, scale, color, and performance
  • Maintain clear design files, revisions, approvals, and handoffs throughout the project lifecycle
  • Explore new materials, processes, technologies, and creative approaches
  • Use Photoshop and emerging AI-powered creative tools thoughtfully to expand possibilities and accelerate exploration
  • Help evolve the systems connecting design, project management, sampling, and production
  • Participate in client presentations and design conversations as your product knowledge grows

How Design & Project Management Work Together

Our designers and project managers work as partners.

Design leads the creative development of the product: interpreting the brief, developing artwork, exploring color and material, preparing production files, and carrying the integrity of the design through sampling.

Project management leads the movement of the project: client communication, timelines, pricing, approvals, documentation, production coordination, logistics, and delivery.

The relationship between the two is highly collaborative. Designers bring imagination and visual judgment. Project managers bring structure and continuity. Together, they turn an idea into a beautiful physical object and a great client experience.

Who You Are

You notice things. Proportion. Texture. The relationship between two colors. The detail everyone else walked past.

You have a strong aesthetic point of view and enjoy making ideas better through collaboration. You're receptive, thoughtful, and comfortable sharing your perspective.

You bring positive energy to a team. You communicate openly, treat people well, take ownership of your work, and enjoy working alongside people who care about what they're creating.

You're curious about how things are made. A decision on screen leads you naturally toward questions about fiber, construction, texture, scale, craft, and the physical environment where the piece will eventually live.

You enjoy creative constraints and the unexpected solutions they produce.

You're also curious about where technology is taking design. You experiment, explore, develop your judgment, and use new tools in service of stronger ideas.

You can look at ten possibilities, choose one, and explain why.

What We're Looking For

  • Professional experience in graphic design, textile design, surface design, interior design, fashion, visual design, or a related creative discipline
  • A portfolio demonstrating exceptional aesthetic judgment, composition, color, and visual problem-solving
  • Strong Adobe Photoshop skills
  • Experience with Illustrator or other visual design software
  • Ability to interpret creative direction and develop original visual solutions
  • Strong attention to detail across artwork, revisions, and production files
  • Ability to manage multiple creative assignments and deadlines
  • Clear, warm, and collaborative communication
  • Curiosity about materials, manufacturing, architecture, interiors, and physical environments
  • Interest in contemporary AI-assisted creative tools
  • Experience with rugs, textiles, flooring, hospitality, interiors, or related products is valuable
  • An energetic, resourceful approach to learning and solving problems

The Opportunity

You'll learn a highly specialized design discipline from people who have spent decades developing it while helping shape what its next generation can become.

You'll work closely with our founder, project management team, clients, and manufacturing partners. As your understanding of the product grows, so will your creative autonomy, client exposure, and opportunity to influence the studio.

For someone with talent, curiosity, and ambition, there is significant room to grow here.

How We Work

We care deeply about the work and enjoy the people we make it with.

Our studio values curiosity, generosity, initiative, experimentation, integrity, and good energy. We like people who bring ideas into the room, help their teammates, stay curious, communicate clearly, and take pride in making something exceptional together.

High standards. Open minds. Good people. Beautiful work.
