About the Role
We are seeking an experienced, highly technical Tax Manager to lead advanced tax planning, run client-facing tax strategy meetings, and oversee the quality of tax plans and tax returns across the firm. This leader will serve as the firm’s internal expert on complex tax matters, client strategy, and integrated financial planning.
This role requires deep tax expertise, exceptional communication skills, and the ability to guide both clients and internal advisors through complex planning decisions. The ideal candidate is a seasoned professional capable of modeling multi-step tax strategies, reviewing sophisticated returns, and mentoring junior planners.
You will work closely with wealth advisors, tax preparers, and leadership to deliver consistent high-quality planning experiences and maintain the firm’s technical excellence.
Key Responsibilities
Client Strategy & Advanced Planning
- Lead client-facing tax planning meetings with confidence and executive presence
- Translate complex tax concepts into clear, actionable recommendations
- Build and present advanced tax strategy models (Roth conversion planning, multi-year projections, RSUs and equity compensation, QBI, entity selection, real estate strategies, loss harvesting, etc.)
- Provide ongoing tax guidance to clients with complex financial situations (K-1s, rentals, stock compensation, side businesses, multi-state issues)
- Serve as a resource for clients navigating nuanced or high-impact tax scenarios
Tax Return & Plan Review
- Review individual tax returns (Form 1040) and related schedules prepared by internal teams or partners
- Provide constructive feedback and coaching to tax staff and planners
- Identify risks, inconsistencies, and tax planning opportunities
- Oversee accuracy and quality of multi-year tax plans
Financial Planning Integration
- Coordinate tax strategies with investment, retirement, estate, and cash flow planning
- Ensure tax advice aligns with broader financial planning strategies and workflows
- Evaluate tax implications of investment strategies and support tax-efficient portfolio construction
Leadership & Team Development
- Mentor junior planners and tax associates
- Partner with advisors and operations teams to enhance processes
- Establish and maintain quality standards across tax planning deliverables
- Contribute to process improvement and cross-functional collaboration
Analytical & Technical Excellence
- Build and analyze complex tax scenarios
- Perform tax research and stay current on evolving tax laws and strategies
- Apply sound judgment when working with incomplete or complex data
- Maintain strong attention to detail while delivering strategic insights
Tools & Technology
- Tax software (SurePrep, UltraTax, Lacerte, ProSeries, or similar)
- Planning tools (Holistiplan, MoneyGuidePro, eMoney, RightCapital)
- Advanced Excel modeling
- CRM and workflow systems
Qualifications
Required
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
- 7 years of experience in tax planning, preparation, or advisory roles
- Deep knowledge of individual taxation and complex income scenarios
- Experience leading client meetings and communicating effectively with clients
- Experience reviewing tax returns and planning work prepared by others
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Professional presence and strong interpersonal skills
Preferred
- Experience mentoring or managing junior staff
- Background in an RIA, CPA firm, or integrated planning environment
- Experience collaborating with wealth advisors and planning teams
