Position Summary

This position is responsible for functioning both as a caregiver and care manager. In the caregiver role, the Registered Nurse (RN) assumes responsibility for a group of patients during a designated time frame while implementing the Nursing Process. As a care manager, the RN directs and oversees the work of other caregivers—both nurses and non-nurses—through delegation, coordination, supervision, and evaluation of patient care outcomes. The individual in this role must fully understand the operations of Patient Care Services and be able to make sound judgments when necessary.

Essential Functions

  • Conducts comprehensive assessments of patients' physiological, psychosocial, and cognitive status.

  • Delivers care consistently by adhering to established procedures, policies, and care plans.

  • Identifies learning needs of patients and their families and implements effective teaching strategies.

  • Documents patient information accurately through electronic medical records or paper processes in accordance with regulatory requirements.

  • Demonstrates awareness of patient rights and maintains sensitivity to diverse backgrounds.

  • Effectively delegates and supervises patient care activities among assigned coworkers.

  • Utilizes sound critical thinking for organization and prioritization of care.

  • Ensures adherence to safety protocols and guidelines.

  • Assists with patient admissions and discharges, coordinates break coverage, and supports staff problem-solving.

  • Engages in professional development through training and workshops to stay current in the field.

  • Maintains professional conduct and appearance in accordance with organizational standards.



Work Environment

This position reports to the Nursing Department Director, House Supervisor, Charge Nurse, and other designated supervisory staff. Collaboration with patients, physicians, and clinicians is essential for optimizing patient care outcomes.



Education & Experience

  • Education: Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.

  • License: Current RN licensure in Washington State.

  • Certification: Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days of hire.

  • Experience: Preferred experience in acute care nursing with a minimum of one year in specialty departments.

  • Skills & Competencies:

    • Ability to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care for assigned patients.

    • Strong critical thinking and independent problem-solving skills.

    • Accountable and adherent to ethical guidelines.

    • Ability to manage crises effectively.

    • Competency in caring for patients across the age spectrum.

    • Proficiency in required medical equipment and technology.





Physical Requirements

  • Frequent standing, walking, lifting, reaching, kneeling, bending, pushing, and pulling.

  • Ability to lift and carry moderate weights and perform physical tasks for extended periods.

  • Strong observational and decision-making capabilities for managing acutely ill patients.

  • Effective communication skills for accurate information exchange with healthcare professionals and families.



Specialized Certifications for Family Birthing Center

  • Completion of the American Academy of Pediatrics Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) required prior to the end of orientation, renewed every 2 years.

  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification to be obtained within 6 months of hire, renewed every 2 years.

  • Completion of the STABLE course within 6 months of orientation completion, renewed every 2 years (optional).

  • Intermediate Fetal Monitoring course required within 3 months
