The Director of Special Programs provides leadership and oversight of the district’s special education programs, ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations while supporting the needs of students with disabilities. This individual will work closely with special education staff, plan and implement professional development, provide guidance on behavioral interventions, assist in the development of Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBA) and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP), and actively participate in Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Program Leadership & Compliance
- Ensure all special education services are delivered in compliance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and state regulations.
- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of special education programs and recommend improvements as needed.
- Collaborate with building principals and district administrators to align special education services with overall district goals.
- Staff Support & Professional Development
- Provide coaching, support, and guidance to special education teachers and support staff.
- Plan and facilitate ongoing professional development opportunities focused on best practices in special education, behavioral interventions, and inclusive teaching strategies.
- Ensure staff members are trained on legal requirements, IEP implementation, and instructional strategies for diverse learners.
- Behavioral Support & Intervention
- Assist staff in addressing behavioral concerns by providing consultation, coaching, and intervention strategies.
- Lead the development and implementation of Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBA) and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP) to support students with behavioral needs.
- Support schools in crisis intervention, de-escalation strategies, and the use of positive behavior supports.
- IEP Meeting Participation & Parent Collaboration
- Attend IEP meetings to ensure compliance, support staff, and collaborate with families in developing individualized plans for students.
- Act as a liaison between the district, parents, and community agencies to ensure effective communication and coordination of services.
- Assist in resolving disputes and concerns related to special education services.
- Data Analysis & Program Improvement
- Use student performance data and progress monitoring tools to assess program effectiveness and drive decision-making.
- Develop and implement improvement plans to enhance student achievement and special education outcomes.
- Other Duties
- Stay current on special education laws, policies, and best practices.
- Collaborate with district leadership on budgeting and resource allocation for special education services.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Master’s degree in Special Education, Educational Leadership, or a related field.
- Valid Administrator License or Special Education Director Endorsement (preferred).
- Minimum of five years of experience in special education, with leadership experience preferred.
- Deep understanding of IDEA, Section 504, and state/federal special education regulations.
- Strong leadership, communication, and collaboration skills.
- Experience in behavior management, FBA/BIP development, and crisis intervention.
- Ability to support and develop educators in implementing effective special education practices.
WORK ENVIRONMENT & EXPECTATIONS
- The position requires travel between school buildings and participation in evening meetings as necessary.
- The role involves working with students, staff, and families in sometimes challenging situations, requiring strong problem-solving and interpersonal skills.
