Applicants submitting resumes to this announcement will be in a pool of candidates considered throughout the 2026-2027 school year to fill substitute dormitory staff (Human Services Technician/Residential Educator) vacancies at the Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf. In addition, MSA's ESY-Summer School Program runs for 3 weeks in July, and applicants will be needed for this program. This position is eligible for an additional shift differential of $2.25 between the hours of 6pm-6am.
This position provides direct care supervision of students in the residential dormitories on the Academy for the Deaf campus.
**Positions at the MN State Academy for the Deaf require American Sign Language (ASL) Skills. Candidates will be assessed for signing skills prior to hire**
Minimum Qualifications
- A passing score on a valid and reliable formal assessment (Parapro or Paraeducator) demonstrating the knowledge and ability to assist with instruction in reading/language, writing, mathematics or readiness for each OR the ability to pass the Parapro or Paraeducator assessment within the first 6 months of hire.
- Knowledge or experience working with students in an educational and/or dormitory setting or in a similar setting as a caregiver.
- Ability to read and write English sufficient to understand and follow directions and to maintain records and documentation.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate in conversational sign language (to be assessed prior to offer of hire).
- Human relations skills sufficient to establish rapport with and provide direction to residential students.
- Demonstrated knowledge in writing basic reports, do basic arithmetic, and read and interpret charts and graphs.
- Ability to perform emergency procedures and personal safety techniques.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced ASL Skills
- Previous experience/background working with deaf/hard of hearing students.
- Demonstrated knowledge in therapeutic intervention, first aid/CPR.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs with assistance.
- Must be able to walk/stand for at least eight hours.
Additional Requirements
- Successful completion of a Criminal Background Check within the past 12 months.
