JOB DUTIES

Directs, supervises, delegates and evaluates nursing care provided to patients by using professional skills and judgments.

Hires, orients, schedules, evaluates, counsels, and recommends the termination of assigned staff with the assistance of Human Resources.

Effectively communicates with physicians as needed.

Collaborates with physicians in planning patient’s plan of care.

Demonstrates cost conscious use of supplies and ensures that equipment is maintained in optimum condition.

Assumes responsibility for unit fiscal management.

Prepares departmental Capital budget in cooperation with Materials Management and Accounting.

Prepares departmental FTE and Expense budget in cooperation with accounting.

Together with Quality, follows up on action plans and new implementations, specific to Nursing, per DOH and/or DNV regulations.

Ensures quality patient care.

Act on identified problems and/or situations and provide feedback.

Collaborates with departments to enhance the Employee Experience.

Works closely with Guest Relations and the Quality Department to ensure timely resolution to patient grievances.

Remain apprised of the CNE’s and Organization’s annual strategic goals.

Establishes the short and long-term goals of the Surgery Department. 

Attends meetings as necessary.

Communicates with and serves as a liaison between nursing, patient, patient’s family, physician and surrounding community.

Promotes an environment in which the care team can work cooperatively toward objectives.

Seeks assistance from appropriate resource persons as necessary in solving clinical and management problems.

Ensures that patient care is provided according to policy, procedure and patient care standards specific to the unit.

Functions as clinical and managerial resource to guide and validates the independent decision making of the staff.

 Coaches and mentors staff.

Participates in the orientation of new staff and in the clinical experience of staff and students.

Assumes personal responsibility for professional development and continuing education.

Identifies staff development needs and recredentialing needs and coordinates programs to meet those needs.

Makes routine inspections of facilities to assure that established policies and procedures are being implemented and followed.

Coordinates or institutes emergency measures for all codes and disasters occurring on her/his unit.

Conducts unit meetings with staff.

Performs other duties as assigned by authorized personnel as may be required.

 

SPECIFIC JOB DEMANDS

Strength: Medium Work - Lifting, Carrying, Pushing, Pulling 20 - 50 Lbs. occasionally, 10 - 25 Lbs. frequently or up to 10 Lbs. constantly.

Stooping: Occasionally - Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist, requiring full use of the lower extremities and back muscles.

Reaching: Frequently - Extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.

Handling: Frequently - Seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with hand or hands. Fingers are involved only to the extent that they are an extension of the hand, such as to turn a switch or shift automobile gears.

Fingering: Frequently - Picking, pinching, or otherwise working primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand or arm as in handling.

Feeling: Frequently - Noting attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature, or texture, by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.

Talking: Frequently - Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word to impart oral information to clients or to the public and to convey detailed spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.

Hearing: Frequently - Perceiving the nature of sounds by ear.

Near Acuity: Frequently - Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less.

Accommodation: Occasionally - Adjustment of lens of eye to bring an object into sharp focus. This factor is required when doing near point work at varying distances from the eye.

Color Vision: Frequently - Ability to identify and distinguish colors.

 

MINIMUM EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

Professional knowledge of nursing theory and practice at a level normally acquired through completion of an accredited School of Nursing.

Current State Nursing License.

BSN required .

Masters preferred.

At least five years recent clinical experience in nursing leadership. Surgical leadership experience preferred.

Communication skills necessary to effectively:

Provide instruction to the surgeon, anesthesia, surgical staff, patient and/or significant other

Provide explanations to the patient and/or significant other

Explain nursing intervention

Communicate with other members of the health team.

Physical Requirements: Talking, telephone use, hearing, ability to use the computer.

Analytical skills necessary to develop and implement a plan for nursing care appropriate to the patient, and to solve problems concerning patient’s mental or physical well-being.

Ability to concentrate and prioritize, plan and perform professional nursing care, resolve patient care problems, and interact with patients, families, and other team members - often during stressful situations.

Mental Requirements: Remembering, reasoning, critical thinking, understanding, problem solving capabilities, emotionally stable.

Ability to make rounds. Must independently be able to respond to an emergency situation.

Physical requirements: Lifting, reaching, walking, carrying, pushing, pulling. Ability to see and hear with or without mechanical aides.

Ability to manage patient care unit. Must be able to use the following Management Accountabilities/ Competencies: conflict resolution, staff counseling, problem solving, disciplinary process, policy and procedure implementation, teamwork, staff scheduling, support of management peers, interviewing, budgeting process, cost containment skills.

Current BLS Healthcare Provider card.

 

 WORKING CONDITIONS

Normal patient care environment with little exposure to excessive noise, dust, and temperature changes. A large part of work time is standing or walking. Stress is a large factor in environment.

Subject to certain distasteful patient care activities and exposure to communicable diseases.

Work week may exceed 40 hours. May be scheduled weekend and/or holiday hours.

May be exposed to potential hazards such as chemical wastes, body wastes, fluids and other possible infectious material.
