MLC Recruitment is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Controller to lead and oversee all accounting and financial reporting operations for our client in Syracuse, NY. The Controller will be responsible for managing the company's core accounting functions, ensuring compliance with financial regulations, maintaining strong internal controls, and providing timely financial information to support strategic decision-making.

This leadership role partners closely with senior management to drive financial performance, improve operational efficiency, and support the organization's long-term financial objectives.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Management & Reporting

  • Oversee all accounting operations, including the general ledger and month-end and year-end close processes.
  • Prepare and analyze accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Present financial reports and key performance metrics to senior leadership.
  • Develop financial models and analyses to support business planning and strategic initiatives.

Accounting Operations

  • Manage all Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable functions.
  • Oversee cash management, bank reconciliations, and account reconciliations.
  • Ensure accurate recording of all financial transactions.
  • Monitor accounting workflows and identify opportunities to improve efficiency and accuracy.

Budgeting & Financial Planning

  • Lead the annual budgeting process and periodic forecasting.
  • Monitor departmental budgets and provide variance analysis.
  • Partner with department leaders to support financial planning and cost management initiatives.
  • Provide recommendations to improve financial performance and operational effectiveness.

Tax & Compliance

  • Coordinate preparation and filing of federal, state, and local tax reports.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable financial reporting and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage relationships with external auditors, tax advisors, and financial institutions.
  • Support annual financial audits and other compliance reviews.

Internal Controls & Risk Management

  • Develop, implement, and maintain strong internal controls and accounting policies.
  • Evaluate financial processes and recommend improvements to strengthen controls and reduce risk.
  • Ensure safeguarding of company assets and integrity of financial information.

Leadership

  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff, fostering professional development and accountability.
  • Establish priorities, monitor performance, and promote continuous process improvement.
  • Collaborate with executive leadership to provide financial insights that support organizational growth and strategic initiatives.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressive accounting experience, including financial reporting and accounting operations.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting standards.
  • Experience with budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, tax reporting, and internal controls.
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel and accounting/ERP software.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Preferred

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation.
  • Experience implementing or improving accounting systems and financial processes.

Salary : $100,000 - $120,000
