SUMMARY

   The House Supervisor assumes 12-hour responsibility on weekends (Saturday/Sunday) and varied-hours as designated during the week (Monday-Friday). She/He is responsible for supervising all aspects of high-quality patient care in age-appropriate (pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric) patients. She/He has the authority and responsibilities for taking all possible steps to assure the Nursing Care Objectives are established and met by all nursing staff under her/his supervision. Cooperates with nursing service administration to establish major objectives and standards of nursing practice. Manages, directs, and supervises all hospital units according to state, federal and other accrediting agencies. She/He acts as administrator in the absence of administration. Additionally, he/she is responsible for functioning well as a member of the multidisciplinary team. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Works inside under normal temperature conditions with adequate light, in a well ventilated, clean area; some areas are limited in space; usually works around others; must expect some moderate noise.

  • Position requires sitting for 25% of the workday and mobility 75% of the workday.
  • There is frequent stopping, bending, kneeling, and crouching.
  • There is frequent reaching, use of hands and receptive action.
  • Requires occasional lifting or carrying up to 25 pounds, pushing/pulling up to 50 pounds.

There is a continuous need for speaking with clear diction and hearing sensitivity on conversation either by phone or in person.

Continuous visual acuity at close and distant range.

Occasional exposure to electrical shock.

Conditions of work may involve exposure to communicable diseases and on-the-job injuries.

Some exposure to hazardous chemicals. Occasional exposure to radiation.  

This position has an OSHA Category I level of exposure to blood and body substances. Category I tasks are all procedures or other job-related tasks involving an inherent potential for mucous membrane or skin contact with blood, body fluids or body tissues or a potential for spills or splashes with blood, body fluids or tissues. Use of appropriate protective measure is required for every employee engaged in Category I tasks.

Completes Twenty-four (24) hours of Board approved Continuing Education mandatory per two (2) years by the Alabama Board of Nursing.

Completed Annual Review Online as required by State Regulations.

Parks vehicle in designated areas and not areas needed for patients.

Assist/act as a liaison between physicians/nursing administration/hospital administration, patient care teams and employees as needed.

Counsels/assists with counseling employees as needed (always have another RN present).

Attends 100% of mandatory meetings/in-services; 75% of schedules in-services/meetings. 

Responsible for assessing the staffing needs from shift to shift in order to meet the acuity/needs of the patient population and assists other departments as needed.

Make Nursing Unit/Hospital rounds as needed, assisting each unit as needed.

Assists with special projects as needed to assist with meeting deadlines. Assist with Infection Control, CQI, Employee Health, Committee meetings, processes as needed.

Assists with/informs of any equipment/product that is needed or not in safe working condition or requested by nursing.

Willingness to work over or extra hours as needed.

Assists with orientation of new employees. Serves as a preceptor as needed.

Knowledgeable of, enforces, assists and observe all EMTALA, Alabama Procurement of Death, Emergency Codes, Advance Directives, AMA LWMS, Elopements and Restraints; staffing ratios/guidelines, credentialing ABN guidelines.

Assist with researching/updating new policies and procedures, keeping staff informed of staff memos and other updates. Coordinates with Nursing Administration and other Department Managers as needed.

Demonstrates knowledge of patient’s rights and responsibilities.

Requirements

Education/Experience: Graduated from an accredited school of nursing with a minimum of an Associate’s in Nursing. Bachelor’s degree preferred and/or current certifications in specialty areas (i.e., CCRN,GEN, TNCC, and Medical/Surgical, Supervision).

License/Certification: Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Alabama. Must be Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certified. Must maintain CEUs consistent with requirements of Alabama Board of Nursing.
