ABOUT MIXTECO INDIGENA COMMUNITY ORGANIZING PROJECT
Founded in 2001, Mixteco/Indígena Community Organizing Project (MICOP) supports, organizes and empowers the indigenous migrant communities of California’s Central Coast through improved access to health and community resources, community organizing, language interpretation, education, direct assistance, cultural promotion, and our indigenous-led Radio Indígena community radio station. MICOP offers a fast-paced, multilingual and multicultural work environment dedicated to carrying out our mission.
Summary
The Community Organizer will organize and coordinate the Tequio youth group. The person in this position will work with indigenous youth to promote and ensure academic success, implement leadership in migrant indigenous youth, reduce discrimination, and increase pride and self-esteem.
Responsibilities
Organize youth around community issues to create social, systemic changes that create a better quality of life for indigenous youth in California's central coast.
Motivate and inspire indigenous youth to fight for their dreams, to strengthen their leadership skills and indigenous identity.
Develop a sense of identity and family within the Tequio youth group and promote an environment of respect, solidarity, health and equality.
Facilitate weekly meetings to address various topics such as the history of the indigenous people, the importance of teamwork, dismantling oppressive systems through decolonization work, among other topics.
Promote and expand the Tequio program and concept in schools.
Represents the Tequio program to the public.
Network with community members who can help the Tequio program.
Make reminder and follow-up calls to youth, including the use of email, texts, and video calls.
Communication and follow-up with parents/guardians, as needed.
Coordinate presenters for Tequio club meetings in schools.
Schedule meeting agendas and language access.
Organize and coordinate field trips to universities and/or community colleges.
Help keep Tequio's Youth Group Facebook page, Instagram, and social media updated.
Keep the list of Tequio club members updated.
Participate in the organization of the Oaxacan Youth Meeting.
Coordinate and support Youth Leaders to prepare applications to participate in presentations at conferences, schools, and other activities.
Report the activities carried out weekly to the manager of the Tequio program.
Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Speak Spanish and an Indigenous language such as Mixteco.
Ability to communicate proficiently with diverse groups of people.
Ability to work with young people and motivate them.
Computer skills-MS Office Suite and Google Workspace.
Commitment and dedication to the project.
Ability to work in a team and collaborate with colleagues.
Achieve goals and have good time management.
Be organized / a / x, keep a calendar of activities.
Ability to work in a flexible way, being able to work hours on weekends or evenings.
Have dependable transportation.
