Job Title: Yard Driver

Position Summary:

Employees employed as yard drivers operate commercial vehicles to move trailers and product to assigned dock doors / warehouses and the transportation lot. Yard drivers hook and unhook trailers both empty and loaded on a continuous basis throughout the work shift. Yard drivers must work efficiently to meet customer service goals while keeping safety as a priority at all times.

General Purpose:

responsible for the safe and efficient moving of trailers between various Company warehouses and the transportation lot.

Position Responsibilities:

Safely operate commercial vehicles on Company property as well as the public roads surrounding the facility.

Hook commercial vehicles to trailers and move trailers to assigned dock doors efficiently so as to avoid loading/unloading delays.

Drop loaded trailers at assigned dock doors for unloading.

Move empty trailers to assigned dock doors for loading.

Move completed loads to the transportation lot to await delivery.

Communicate with yard coordinator to receive instructions and directions concerning the movement of trailers.

Make sure that loaded trailers containing perishable product maintain an acceptable temperature to keep product from spoiling.

Essential Skill and Experience:

Employees occupying the position of yard driver will possess a high school diploma / GED or have job experience demonstrating the ability to read/ write and execute elementary math.

All yard drivers must possess a Commercial Drivers License as well as possessing a current Department of Transportation physical card/ long form. Yard drivers must meet all required Department of Transportation requirements to operate a commercial motor vehicle. Yard drivers must successfully participate in the required Department of Transportation drug testing program as well as the Company’s drug testing program.

Yard drivers must possess the skills and experience necessary to safely and efficiently operate a commercial motor vehicle. Yard drivers must be able to back trailers into tight spaces safely and efficiently as well as the ability to safely and efficiently hook and unhook trailers.

Yard drivers should have the ability to work with or without supervision and complete assigned tasks with or without supervision. Yard drivers should possess good communication skills as well as the ability to work with other yard drivers as a team to accomplish tasks.

Yard drivers should be able to recognize the importance of working safely and willingly comply with all safety rules and procedures.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

Yard drivers should be physically fit enough to climb in and out of commercial vehicles on a continuous basis throughout a 10-12 hour shift. Yard drivers are required to open and shut trailer doors as well as hook and un-hook airlines. Employees are required to roll trailer dollies up and down throughout a work shift and to unlock fifth wheels before pulling out from under a trailer. Walking medium distances is required throughout the shift.

Yard drivers are required to work outside in all types of weather and temperatures throughout a 10-12 hour shift.

General Expectations:

Yard drivers are expected to abide by all Company policies. Because the safety sensitive functions performed by yard drivers, employees in this position are expected to act as role models in the adherence of all safety procedures.

Yard drivers are expected to work well with others and to work with other yard drivers as a team. Employees in this position are expected to minimize down time due to the time sensitive issues related to their job.

Because of the importance of this position in providing superior customer service to the customers of Mitchell Grocery Corporation, yard drivers are expected to perform their duties safely and with the best interest of the customer in mind at all times.
