Tax Assessor
JOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible for providing clerical support to the department.
MAJOR DUTIES
- Answers telephones and greets public; provides information and assistance.
- Attends Board of Assessors meetings to record minutes; provides secretarial support to the board.
- Inputs information into computerized databases.
- Receives and distributes mail.
- Receives all property returns.
- Receives all appeals.
- Receives and processes all special-use applications and homestead applications.
- Receives and processes purchase orders.
- Prepares and processes deeds for transfer.
- Organizes building permits for inspection.
- Maintain office supply inventory, reorders as needed.
- Registers mobile homes.
- Updates property sales books.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
- Knowledge of modern office procedures and practices.
- Knowledge of state and county law, rules, and regulations regarding property tax and appraisal methods.
- Skill in performing basic mathematical calculations.
- Skill in reading and interpreting maps.
- Skill in operating such office equipment as a computer, typewriter, and copier.
- Skill in maintaining files.
- Skill in oral and written communications.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Chief Appraiser assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work
for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include the Official Georgia Code and the Appraisal Procedure Manual. These guidelines are generally
clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
- The work consists of related clerical duties. Frequent interruptions contribute to the complexity of the work.
- The purpose of this position is to provide clerical support to the department. Successful performance contributes
to the efficient and effective operation of the department.

- Contacts are typically with co-workers, other county employees, real estate agents, bank officials, attorneys,
land surveyors, and the general public
- Contacts are typically to give and exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
- The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing or stooping.
The employee occasionally lifts light objects.
- The work is typically performed in an office.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion
of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Ability to meet necessary requirements of Appraiser I as mandated by the Georgia Department of Revenue.
