JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for the enforcement of local, state and federal laws, for the provision of courtroom security,

and for the service of legal papers.

MAJOR DUTIES

Patrol

  • Patrols the county to detect and deter crime.
  • Enforces traffic laws.
  • Responds to calls for service.
  • Prepares required reports.
  • Investigates automobile accidents; prepares accident reports.
  • Secures crime scenes and collects evidence.
  • Apprehends and arrests suspects.
  • Transports prisoners.
  • Interviews complainants, witnesses, victims, suspects and informants.

Warrants

  • Obtains and serves search and criminal warrants,
  • Apprehends and arrests suspects.
  • Transports prisoners to court and other locations.

Courts

  • Maintains order and security in the courtroom,
  • Prepares courtroom for hearings.
  • Escorts defendants.
  • Collects evidence from jurors.

  • Provides security at school and other special events.
  • Escorts funerals and parades; provides traffic control at special events.
  • Assists Fire Department personnel at fire and emergency medical scenes.
  • Attends required training sessions.
  • Maintains assigned vehicles and equipment.
  • Performs special assignments as assigned.
  • Serves on special teams and task forces as assigned.
  • Performs related duties.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

  • Knowledge of federal, state and local laws, county ordinances, criminal traffic laws, and departmental policies

and procedures.

  • Knowledge of the boundaries and geography of the county.
  • Knowledge of criminal investigation methods, practices and equipment.
  • Knowledge of the criminal justice system and court procedures.
  • Skill in the use of firearms, communications equipment, and other standard and specialized equipment.
  • Skill in interview techniques.
  • Skill in processing, analyzing and preserving evidence.
  • Skill in operating emergency vehicles.
  • Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions.
  • Skill in the preparation of clear and precise administrative reports.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Sergeant assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with

procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include local, state and federal laws and Sheriff’s Department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally

clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

  • The work consists of related law enforcement duties. The necessity of responding to potentially dangerous situations

contributes to the complexity of the position.

  • The purpose of this position is to patrol the county to detect and deter crime. Successful performance helps contributes

to the enforcement of local, state and federal laws and to the safety of life and property.

CONTACTS

  • Contacts are typically with co-workers, representatives of other law enforcement agencies, offenders, victims of crime,

witnesses, suspects, and members of the general public.

  • Contacts are typically to exchange information, motivate persons, resolve problems, and provide services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending or crouching. The employee

occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.

  • The work is typically in the field. The employee is exposed to contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, and

occasional inclement weather. The work requires the use of specialized law enforcement equipment and protective devices.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in

addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.

  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with

the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.

  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or

equipment operated.

  • Must be P.O.S.T Certified Deputy
