What are the responsibilities and job description for the School Counselor position at MIT?

Provides a high quality STEMM evolved instruction within a high technology based small school environment where every student is acknowledged and valued as an individual; uphold the mission, vision and values of Maricopa Institute of Technology and contribute to the positive learning environment.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support the mission, vision, and core values of Maricopa Institute of Technology.
  • Expect to guide college-preparatory learning and guidance that align with our school standards.
  • Establish a culture of high expectations that includes the shared belief that every student will attend college.
  • Develop, manage, and implement a comprehensive school counseling program based on the ASCA National Model.
  • Collaborate with parents, administration, and faculty members to improve student achievement.
  • Assist students in developing an Education and Career Action Plan (ECAP) with annual updates and revisions as needed.
  • Provides whole-group classroom lessons based on ASCA National Model and district and state curriculum goals.
  • Assist students with college and career planning through classroom curriculum and interpreting and evaluating aptitude and standardized tests.
  • Assist students in developing problem-solving skills and promoting social-emotional well-being.
  • Assists students in crisis situations and make referrals to district and community resources when necessary.
  • Support 504 Accommodation referral, evaluation, and implementation for students.
  • Support students with special education needs by serving on IEP teams and advocating for student.
  • Maintains student records and protects their confidentiality.
  • Remains current with district, state, and federal policy and procedures.
  • Remains current with post-secondary college and career opportunities and best practices.
  • Promotes a positive and inclusive school culture.

Personal and Social Development:

  • Identifies and embeds extra-curricular activity goals and documenting participation in appropriate activities and organizations in students’ ECAP
  • Supports the development of students’ interpersonal relationships, decision making, goal setting, and understanding of safety and survival skills
  • Participation in crisis intervention to individuals/family/school
  • Appropriately support students’ awareness of multicultural/diversity awareness
  • Provides opportunities for peer facilitation
  • Consultation/collaboration with appropriate support service agencies for student referrals
  • Education in understanding self and others
  • Supports the development of students’ peer relationships and effective social skills
  • Support the development of communication, problem solving, decision making, conflict resolution, coping strategies, and study skills
  • Supports with District approved substance abuse education

College and Career Development:

  • Supports students’ development of post-secondary planning and application processes
  • Assists students in the identification of potential career interests and career planning
  • Facilitate career awareness and the connections between the word of work and educational achievements and growth
  • Support students in developing strategies to achieve future goals

Support for District Goals and School Reform Initiatives:

  • Demonstrates a commitment to professional growth by participating in Professional Development opportunities
  • Actively participates in consultation, collaboration and teaming
  • Implements Counseling Services programs to support student achievement
  • Participation in school-wide achievement data analysis for purposes of school planning
  • Participates in data gathering and analysis to support and evaluate student success
  • Assists with various testing programs and services (Advanced Placement, PSAT, AzMERIT, Terra Nova, etc.)
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings and extra-curricular/school-related activities and committees
  • Other duties

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Holds a valid Arizona Standard School Counselor certificate -OR-
  • Holds a valid, comparable School counselor certificate and is in good standing with that other state. -OR-
  • A Master’s Degree (required) or more advanced degree in Counseling Social Work, or Psychology from an accredited institution or the completion of a Board-approved school counselor program. Official transcript(s) required. -AND-ONE of the following
    • Completion of at least six (6) semester hours of practicum in Counseling in a school setting completed through an accredited institution.
    • -OR- Completion of one year of full-time experience as a counselor in a setting which primarily serves students in 7th grade through grade 12.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of counseling experience or the equivalent, providing the skills and knowledge necessary to plan and implement meaningful and effective guidance and counseling activities.
  • Excellent skills in project planning and in coordinating multiple short- and long-term projects.
  • Master’s Degree preferred
  • Fingerprint clearance Card

DESIRED SKILLS:

  • Well-versed but not limited to knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Google applications, on-line teaching portals and programs.
  • Ability to compile data, assemble reports and analyze the need.
  • Demonstrated success or potential for success in obtaining external funds.
  • Experience working with culturally and linguistically diverse learners and in adapting instruction for students with special needs.
  • Ability to use independent judgment and to manage and impart confidential information.
  • Ability to develop and deliver presentations.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
  • Knowledge of student recruitment and retention issues.
  • Bilingual, English and Spanish skills are desired but not required. 

WORK CONDITIONS:

  • The work environment is a normal school setting; the noise level ranges from quiet to loud, but is usually moderate. The playground setting can include exposure to dirt, dust, and extreme seasonal temperatures.

Performance to be evaluated in accordance with Board policy on evaluation of certified staff to include but not limited to the following:

  • Faculty Performance Folio;
  • Student Academic Portfolios;
  • Interaction with administrator and staff collaboration and collegiality;
  • Parent Communication and Involvement;
  • Community Participation; and
  • Parent Surveys and Student Surveys.
