Technical Staff - Systems Analysis

MIT Lincoln Laboratory
Lexington, MA Full Time
POSTED ON 5/14/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 6/10/2026
The Tactical Space Systems Group (Group 96) develops technologies and prototypes to enhance the performance and resilience of U.S. space systems and to provide flexible new space capabilities to the U.S. Government. The Group executes both large-scale system prototypes including satellite payloads and ground systems, as well as earlier stage technology development and demonstration programs with partner groups across the laboratory. The group is predominantly composed of scientists and engineers with expertise in aerospace engineering, systems engineering, electronics and software/firmware.

Job Description

Group 96 is seeking a Technical Staff member to perform analysis work that supports the group’s activities in technology development and prototyping in the space superiority mission area. The staff member will partner with other members of the group focused on hardware development to define the goals and performance objectives, and tie those objectives to mission impacts for the group’s sponsor community and partners.

This candidate will be expected to develop an understanding of the current state-of-the-art of U.S. and foreign space capabilities and to maintain awareness of new technology developments with potential to impact the space domain. They will be involved in scoping and executing study efforts in partnership with other groups at the laboratory. Such efforts may be oriented around solving an open-ended problem (what is the best way to accomplish a particular goal?) or around assessing the feasibility of a particular approach or application of technology. These studies may lead to new operating concepts, new technology development programs or substantial new system prototyping activities at the scale of satellites, satellite payloads or ground systems.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in physics-based modeling and analysis but will not necessarily be an expert in tactical space systems or defense systems analysis. The ideal candidate will meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • Have done previous work in the space domain
  • Have utilized physics-based modeling to interpret experimental results they were involved in producing
  • Have an interest in supporting collaborative efforts with a substantial hardware development component

Requirements

  • A Ph.D. in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Engineering or a related field, or a Master’s degree with at least 3-5 years of relevant experience
  • Previous experience in physics-based modeling, simulation and analysis
  • Demonstrated interest in collaborating with hardware development or experimental efforts to inform modeling and guide those efforts
  • Excellent spoken and written communications skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Ability to support work-related travel up to 10%
