Superconducting Qubit Experimentalist

MIT Lincoln Laboratory
Lexington, MA Full Time
POSTED ON 11/21/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 1/7/2026
The mission of the Quantum-Enabled Computation Group is to explore, prototype, and demonstrate transformative computational advantage by leveraging quantized and entangled signals. Our work falls into three key thrusts: quantum computing with superconducting qubits, classical computing with single flux quanta in superconducting circuits, and quantum information science and algorithms. We also enable the broader US research enterprise via superconducting device foundries and open-source software development, and support the US Government as strategic Test and Evaluation partners and subject matter experts. Our interdisciplinary Group includes scientific experts in computer science, quantum information, device theory, materials science, fabrication and integration engineering, electrical and microwave engineering, and quantum physics.

Job Description

The group seeks full-time Technical Staff to drive research at the forefront of superconducting quantum computing. Our work spans foundational studies of noise mechanisms in qubits and demonstrations of novel qubit modalities to the development of extensible hardware platforms for testbed-scale applications. The successful candidate will join MIT Lincoln Laboratory’s world-class team of researchers and leverage our industry-leading fabrication capabilities to address important questions driving the performance and utility of superconducting quantum technology.

The successful candidate will be responsible for setting experimental plans and directions; designing and simulating superconducting quantum circuits; developing measurement and control software; implementing calibration, automation, and benchmarking protocols; performing experiments; and analyzing and documenting results. Experience in some or all of these areas is required, either through prior work on superconducting qubits or within a related field. You will work with a team of experts in superconducting qubit theory, design, fabrication, and measurement, and a successful candidate will be excited to work collaboratively across this team. Members of the Technical Staff are expected to mentor and supervise more junior researchers, lead small teams of colleagues, contribute to program development and management, and help shape future research directions.

We are hiring for several roles requiring this general skill set, including some that require higher-level security clearances. If you are open to these roles, please indicate this in your application.

Requirements

  • PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Quantum Science/Engineering, or related field; M.S. degree and 5 years’ relevant experience; or employment experience demonstrating an equivalent proficiency
  • Prior experience in experimental quantum science or related fields, with a strong track record evidenced by peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations
  • Demonstrated scientific programming skills (Python, MATLAB, Mathematica, etc.)
  • Excellent technical and inter-personal communication skills
  • Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work successfully as part of a team

Desired:

  • Experience in superconducting qubit research through device measurement, theory, simulation, design, and/or fabrication.
  • Demonstrated record of innovation in quantum circuit design and theory, quantum noise characterization techniques, metrology of quantum operations, quantum algorithm implementation and characterization, and/or other advanced quantum research topics
  • Experience operating cryogenic systems
  • Low-noise RF/microwave measurement expertise

At MIT Lincoln Laboratory, our exceptional career opportunities include many outstanding benefits to help you stay healthy, feel supported, and enjoy a fulfilling work-life balance. Benefits offered to employees include:

  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision plans
  • MIT-funded pension
  • Matching 401K
