Date: Mar 14, 2026

Location: Lexington, MA, US

Company: MIT Lincoln Laboratory

The Advanced Capabilities and Technologies Group researches and develops technology for advanced satellite systems that are used to monitor the activity of objects in space and to perform remote sensing of Earth. Our work focuses on the development of instruments, hardware, and algorithms that provide both space-based and ground-based systems with novel capabilities for detecting, tracking, and imaging objects in space and on Earth. We also manage the Lincoln Near-Earth Asteroid Research (LINEAR) program, which uses ground-based electro-optical sensors at a field site in Socorro, New Mexico, to find and catalog near-Earth objects, such as asteroids and comets.

Position Description

The group seeks Summer 2026 intern students to contribute to a number of challenging projects related to advanced capabilities for space systems. Each intern will be mentored by a technical staff member and work within a project team to develop new system concepts and technologies. Projects may involve: testing and characterization of electro-optical components for a space payload, automation of high-speed instrumentation data collection and analysis, running modeling and simulation tools, operating optical systems in lab experiments, or development and implementation of data analysis algorithms.

Candidates should have a strong academic background and be working toward a BS, MS, or PhD in mathematics, science, engineering, or related disciplines. Candidates should also demonstrate strong communications skills and the ability to work proactively and independently.

Summer Research Program Overview

The Summer Research Program offers students the chance to apply their academic knowledge to real-world national security challenges while working alongside leading scientists and engineers. As an SRP intern, you'll engage in hands-on research, receive dedicated mentorship, and take part in professional development opportunities including workshops, tech talks, and networking events-all while building connections within a vibrant community of peers.

  • Internships are typically 10-12 weeks, with flexible start and end dates, typically May through early August.
  • Housing support is available for eligible non-local interns, including access to discounted university housing in Boston and a one-time taxable relocation payment.
  • Complimentary daily shuttle transportation is provided from Boston-based housing to and from the Lab.
