ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR, TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Associate Director, Technology Transfer and Small Business Development Center (SBDC), leads technology transfer and business development activities for campus and region, leads negotiations with industry for master research agreements, and Industry/University consortium.

Technology Transfer

  • Identify S&T intellectual property to protect, promote and manage such intellectual property, including copyright, patents and licensing/equity decisions at S&T, and help to educate the faculty, staff and students about technology transfer opportunities and process
  • Collaborate with the Office of Sponsored Programs to assist with proposals for extramural funding that have a business component
  • Lead outreach efforts to faculty, staff, students and others to identify and market opportunities; create systematic ways to reach important constituents with regular updates
  • Develop new innovation and entrepreneurship programs and support existing ones across campus, including startup challenges, innovation labs, maker programs, coaching/mentoring, incubators, accelerators and venture funding programs
  • Develop programs to recruit new students to build an innovation-centric campus community
  • Expand efforts to license promising inventions by improving marketing efforts, leveraging alumni resources and exploring creative business creation models
  • Grow royalty income generated through licensing activities
  • Participate in System Technology Transfer Director meetings
  • Evaluate decisions related to invention disclosures
  • Manage patent process interface with outside patent counsel
  • Identify commercialization partners to license technologies
  • Negotiate license agreements (legal approval through UM Legal)
  • Ongoing management of active licenses

Small Business Development Center (SBDC)

  • Serve as SBDC Center Director for S&T center – responsible for 87 counties
  • Expand the reach of the SBDC program along the I-44 corridor
  • Provide training and education on entrepreneurship and business development skills to both the campus community and region – Goals established annually with the State Office of the SBDC program; these goals typically include business creation, job creation and investment metrics
  • Provide coaching, mentoring training and support to the small businesses in the region to improve entrepreneurial skills and abilities increasing likelihood of success of the business venture. Goals will include training numbers, training satisfaction scores
  • Form or expand partnerships with regional groups that promote/support entrepreneurship and business development, such as Cortex, ITEN, BioStL, Missouri Technology Corporation, etc
  • Participate in Directors’ calls and planning sessions, annual reviews, plan annual metrics and participate in State recertification with the SBA
  • Supervise Business Counselors in the office, ensure goals are met and counseling is properly documented
  • Serve as Technology Counselor for region (SBIR/STTR reviews, coaching, pitch reviews)
  • Attend trainings, maintain professional development and certifications
  • Participate in FAST planning and training

Office Technology Transfer and Economic Development management

  • Development and management of budget
  • Oversight and appraisal of staff
  • Participate in University Research Center Director meetings

Office of Sponsored Programs support

  • Manage and negotiate campus wide research and technology transfer related NDA/MTA (legal approval through UM legal, delegated signature authority)
  • Negotiate and manage industry research agreements and industry consortia agreements
  • Support office with miscellaneous agreements, MOUs, letters of intent, IP plans for government contracts, etc

Grants

  • PI of Missouri Enterprise grant

Minimum Qualifications


A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 6 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications


Previous experience leading technology transfer and business development activities for campus and region; leading negotiations with industry for master research agreements, Industry/University consortium agreements.

Within The Kummer College lives several departments: Department of Business and Information Technology (BIT), Department of Economics, Department of Engineering Management and Systems Engineering (EMSE), Kummer Student Programs and the Division of Technology Transfer and Economic Development (TTED).


COLLEGE of ENGINEERING & COMPUTING (CEC)

Missouri S&T’s College of Engineering and Computing is the largest of three colleges at S&T, accounting for approximately 80% of the total enrollment (about 4,500 undergraduates and 800 graduate students). The college includes more than 170 ranked faculty members who serve in 16 undergraduate programs, all with master’s and doctoral equivalents organized into nine academic departments. The college recently added a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering and a Ph.D. in bioengineering, both starting in fall 2024.
