Summary / Objective
Training to become an Equipment Shop Technician.
Essential Job Duties
- Assist Equipment Shop Technicians with a variety of mechanical duties.
- Unload, prepare, and process surplus Department property for the surplus auction.
- Complete property transfers on inventory items.
- Conduct the annual inventory on the auction, loaner, and shop accounts.
- Submit month end expense reports.
- Accept delivery of new vehicles and equipment.
- Wash vehicles and equipment, change engine oil, clean up the shop and grounds area, remove old equipment from old vehicles.
- Rig out new equipment to the specifications requested by the operator, such as, install decals, fire extinguishers, tool boxes, camper shells, running boards, bed covers, radio wiring, radio antennas, and radio mounting hardware.
- Operate heavy equipment including cranes, forklifts, farm equipment, construction equipment, boom lifts, excavators, vehicles and combination vehicles, and a 2-ton truck.
- Purchase supplies and materials for the operation of the shop and maintain shop inventory.
- Recover and deliver disabled vehicles and other equipment and supplies.

Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Must maintain a valid, current driver’s license and CDL.
- At least one (1) year of relevant professional preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge to perform routine maintenance on a vehicle.
- Ability to operate powered hand tools, chain saws, and mowers.
- Ability to maintain accurate records.
- Ability to accept all responsibilities of the job and assigned tasks.
- Ability to keep focused on understanding, anticipating and responding to the needs of customers.
- Ability to accept change and new information and cope with job pressure and stress.
- Ability to develop and sustain cooperative working relationships.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written to express oneself clearly and concisely.
- Ability to work independently on a job site with little direct supervision.
- Ability to work a varied schedule as needed, including weekends and holidays.
Work Environment
- May be subject to exposure to mechanical oils, fumes or airborne particles and work near moving mechanical parts.
- Occasionally exposed to loud noises which may require the use of hearing protection.
Physical Abilities
- Frequently operate tools and heavy equipment safely.
- Frequently communicate and exchange accurate information.
- Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less, three-dimensional vision, and precise hand-eye coordination.
- Regularly lift up to 50 pounds, correctly lift up to 100 pounds or more.
- Concentrated attention is required at all times.
- Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
