What are the responsibilities and job description for the Sales Representative position at Missouri Basin Materials?
MBM is looking for a driven, self-motivated Outside Sales Representative to help grow our customer base and strengthen relationships with contractors and construction professionals.
The ideal candidate has hands-on experience in the construction industry or a strong understanding of how construction projects operate. Previous sales experience is a plus, but we are more interested in finding someone who understands the industry, communicates well, builds strong relationships, and has the drive to create new business.
This is not a position for someone who needs to be constantly managed. We are looking for a self-starter who is comfortable getting out into the field, meeting customers, identifying opportunities, following up, and taking ownership of their results.
Responsibilities
- Develop new business by identifying and pursuing contractors, subcontractors, builders, and other potential customers.
- Build and maintain long-term relationships with existing and prospective customers.
- Spend time in the field visiting jobsites, contractor offices, and customers.
- Learn customers' businesses, upcoming projects, purchasing needs, and pain points.
- Generate leads through prospecting, networking, referrals, jobsite visits, and industry relationships.
- Follow up consistently on leads, quotes, opportunities, and customer needs.
- Work with the MBM team to provide customers with accurate pricing, product information, and service.
- Identify upcoming construction projects and opportunities for MBM to earn new business.
- Maintain an organized sales pipeline and communicate progress on active opportunities.
- Stay knowledgeable about MBM's products, services, capabilities, and the construction market.
- Represent MBM professionally in the field and build a reputation as a dependable resource for customers.
- Take ownership of sales goals and continuously look for ways to grow the territory and customer base.
Ideal Candidate
We are looking for someone who:
- Has construction field experience or strong knowledge of the construction industry.
- Understands contractors, jobsites, project schedules, and how construction businesses operate.
- Is highly self-motivated and comfortable working independently.
- Is willing to prospect and create opportunities instead of waiting for leads to come to them.
- Is confident approaching new people and starting conversations.
- Builds relationships naturally and earns customers' trust.
- Communicates clearly and follows through on commitments.
- Is organized and able to manage multiple customers and opportunities.
- Is competitive, results-driven, and motivated by growth.
- Has a strong work ethic and takes personal responsibility for performance.
Preferred Experience
- Construction, contracting, construction materials, or building-supply experience.
- Previous outside sales or business development experience.
- Existing relationships within the local construction industry.
- Experience working directly with contractors, project managers, superintendents, estimators, or purchasing departments.
Sales experience is preferred but not required. A candidate with strong construction knowledge, the right personality, and the drive to learn sales will be considered.
Required to be willing to get a CDL
What Success Looks Like
A successful MBM salesperson is someone who gets into the market, develops relationships, creates their own opportunities, follows up relentlessly, and becomes a trusted resource for customers.
We want someone who treats their territory like their own business—someone who looks for opportunities without being told where to find them and is motivated by growing both MBM's business and their own earning potential.
