After School Teacher
Summary: The Mississippi Children’s Museum seeks energetic, outgoing individuals who want to work in a fun, educational, fast-paced environment facilitating academic enrichment in the areas of Literacy,
STEM, Arts, and Health. Individuals must provide a high profile, enthusiastic presence when engaging with children, be able to encourage social, physical, and intellectual growth within children, and possess a strategic mindset. Must be a friendly, approachable individual with a passion for children and teaching with excellent communication skills. This is a part-time position requiring approximately 12 hours commitment per week Monday through Thursday.
Responsibilities:
- Plans, prepares, and implements an approved curriculum in identified subject area – your choice of expertise: dance, steam, literacy, physical education.
- Prepares learning materials and equipment, such as books, arts and crafts, stationery, and other supplies as needed.
- Submits needed supplies lists when requested.
- Communicates with other staff members on the progress of children when appropriate.
- Maintains an organized and clean classroom environment and ensures students conduct themselves appropriately.
- Ensures safety and supervision of a group of up to fifteen children.
- Follows a daily schedule in a positive and timely manner.
- Communicates with museum staff and guests in a professional and courteous manner.
- Helps and encourages children with their homework and academic enrichment activities.
- Exhibits a positive attitude and personality with all children.
- Enforces safety rules and ensures the museum’s practices and policies are followed as they relate to children and staff.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Bachelor's degree in teaching, early childhood, or a field of expertise.
- A minimum of 1 years’ experience working as an after-school teacher, teaching assistant, or a similar role with children.
- Lesson planning experience.
- Ability to foster a fun and safe classroom environment conducive to learning.
- Strong knowledge of child behavior and learning patterns.
- Ability to work with children and remain friendly, calm, and patient always.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Solid organizational skills and ability to maintain a tidy and neat work space.
- Ability to respond to safety and emergency situations.
- Must successfully pass background check.
Hours:
Monday to Thursday, 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM, with personal planning time.
