What are the responsibilities and job description for the Staff Attorney/Parent Defender position at Mission First Legal Aid Office?
The Parent Defender/Staff Attorney will represent parents in abuse/neglect proceedings in the Youth Court of Hinds County.
Job Responsibilities:
· Represent parents with neglect, abuse, supervision, and other child welfare issues.
· Negotiate and litigate with various divisions and levels of government.
· Develop and maintain a productive working relationship with the Youth Court, the Department of Child Protection Services, and other officials.
· Coordinate service delivery and reporting with the Office of State Public Defender.
· Ensure compliance with state standards for performance of attorneys representing parents in child protection cases or termination of parental rights proceedings.
· Oversee and coordinate law school students as needed, which may include externs, volunteers, and clinic students.
· Perform other related tasks as directed by the Executive Director or Legal Aid Office Director.
Qualifications:
· Commitment to the vision of Mission First.
· Licensed to practice law in Mississippi.
· Experience in Youth Court law and procedures preferred.
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
· Demonstrated ability to collaborate across organizational boundaries to achieve goals.
· Willingness to serve.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: Up to $75,000.00 per year
