Senior Engineer Strategic Assessments

MISO
Carmel, IN Full Time
POSTED ON 12/20/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 1/20/2026
Description

In this role, you'll help lead the assessment of how long-term regulatory, economic, and industry trends will shape the reliability, efficiency, and adequacy of generation and transmission infrastructure. You'll help lead the dive deep into the complex interactions of our energy systems-like the critical relationship between natural gas and electricity networks-to identify emerging risks and inform bold, forward-looking decisions.

This position is both technical and strategic, ideal for someone who has experience translating complex data into clear insights and actionable recommendations. You'll present your findings to internal teams, regulators, and industry leaders-helping to shape policy, align stakeholders, and drive long-term planning.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Analyzing industry trends and regulatory developments to assess their impact on power system planning.
  • Evaluating the reliability and adequacy of the grid using advanced engineering and economic tools.
  • Monitoring emerging energy issues, including gas-electric interdependencies, to contextualize established or emerging risk profile, threshold and requirements.
  • Creating compelling reports and presentations tailored to a range of audiences.
  • Collaborating across teams to solve tough challenges and ensure reliability alignment.
  • Engaging with regulators and industry partners to build consensus and support sound decision-making.

We seek candidates who possess the following qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, or Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology. Masters degree or above are preferred.
  • At least six years of related experience.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting strategic assessments of regulatory, economic, reliability and industry trends affecting the electric power sector, particularly related to transmission and generation infrastructure.
  • Proven ability to analyze complex system operations-such as long-term reliability, resource adequacy, and market design-using advanced engineering or economic methodologies.

While not required, it would be great if you have experience in any of the following:

  • Experience evaluating emerging risks and incorporating cross-sectoral insights (e.g., gas-electric interdependencies) into system planning and operational strategies.
  • Power System Analysis: Proficiency in transmission planning, load flow analysis, reliability assessment, and understanding of generation-transmission interactions.
  • Regulatory and Market Knowledge: Familiarity with energy policy, regulatory frameworks (e.g., FERC, NERC), and market operations within the electric utility sector.
  • Quantitative Modeling & Analysis: Experience with statistical tools, scenario planning, and decision-making under uncertainty.
  • Simulation Tools: Hands-on experience with power system planning and reliability tools such as PSSE, TSAT, VSAT, PSCAD, PROMOD, SERVM, PLEXOS, TARA, or PROBE.
  • Data Analysis & Visualization: Proficiency in tools like Excel, Python, R, or similar for data manipulation, trend analysis, and visual storytelling.
  • Technical Writing & Presentation: Ability to clearly communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences through written reports and presentations.

Appropriate level will be determined based upon experience and knowledge.

This is a unique opportunity to help modernize and secure the energy systems that power millions-if you're ready to lead with insight and shape what's next, we want to hear from you.
