MISO - Midcontinent Independent System Operator
Carmel, IN Full Time
POSTED ON 9/1/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 10/1/2026
As a Senior Engineer - Intermediate Planning, you'll help MISO bridge the critical space between long-term transmission planning and real-time operations. Your work will focus on the 18-24-month planning horizon, developing transmission and reliability strategies that support Large Load Step-Up Service while helping ensure the grid is prepared for rapidly changing system needs.

This is a highly collaborative role where you'll work across System Planning, Markets, Operations, Resource Adequacy, Generator Interconnection, and Load Integration to turn complex technical studies and system information into practical, coordinated solutions.

How You'll Make an Impact

In this role, you will:
  • Perform Intermediate Planning studies across the 18-24-month horizon, including Firm Service Step-Up analyses and staged firm-service recommendations tied to system upgrades and readiness milestones.
  • Conduct power system studies using tools such as PSS/E and TARA, including power flow modeling, contingency analysis, transfer analysis, transient and voltage stability, and other reliability assessments.
  • Develop near-term strategies that maximize the capabilities of the existing transmission system while maintaining reliable grid performance.
  • Coordinate study scope, assumptions, inputs, and results across Expansion Planning, Generator Interconnection, Load Integration, Markets, Forward Operations, Operations, and Resource Adequacy.
  • Improve the flow of data and information between teams, creating greater transparency and supporting timely, well-informed decisions.

In Your First Year, You'll Know You're Successful If You:
  • Become a trusted technical partner across Planning, Markets, and Operations for MISO's emerging Intermediate Planning work.
  • Successfully perform and communicate 18-24-month reliability studies supporting large-load integration and Firm Service Step-Up needs.
  • Help strengthen the connection between long-term planning decisions and near-term operational readiness.
  • Improve coordination, data transparency, and process alignment across multiple MISO teams.

What We're Looking For:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, or Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology.
  • At least six (6) years of related power system planning or operations experience.
  • Experience with PSS/E power flow and TARA applications.
  • Strong understanding of power system analysis and transmission reliability concepts.
  • Ability to analyze complex scenarios, identify problems, evaluate data, and develop technically sound recommendations.

It Would Be a Plus If You Have:
  • Experience with DSA tools or other power system analysis software.
  • Experience writing scripts or developing automation to improve engineering or analytical processes.
  • Knowledge of NERC and FERC regulatory and compliance requirements.

The appropriate level will be determined based on the selected candidate's experience, knowledge, and qualifications.
