Under the clinical supervision of the Program Director (or their designee), the Lead Peer Mentor oversees the peer mentoring program within the Shawnee County Jail. Lead Peer Mentors shall operate in accordance with the policies set forth by the Board of Directors and as implemented by his/her supervisors and they shall abide by all applicable laws and regulations. The Lead Peer Mentor provides direct peer support services to incarcerated individuals while supervising, coordinating, and mentoring a team of Peer Mentors working in the facility. This position ensures the peer mentoring program aligns with Mirror’s mission, KDADS peer support standards, and Shawnee County Jail protocols to promote recovery, reduce recidivism, and support successful reentry. The Lead Peer Mentor models recovery principles, fosters a positive and trauma-informed environment, and ensures consistent, ethical, and high-quality delivery of peer support services. This Peer Mentor position will be located inside the Shawnee County Jail. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Provide direct supervision, scheduling, and daily oversight of Peer Mentors assigned to the Shawnee County Jail program.
  2. Ensure that peer mentoring services meet KDADS policy standards and adhere to Mirror’s internal protocols and jail requirements.
  3. Serve as a role model and resource for Peer Mentors, offering coaching, feedback, and ongoing professional development.
  4. Facilitate orientation and ongoing training for new Peer Mentors, including ethics, boundaries, documentation, safety, and recovery principles.
  5. Conduct regular team meetings and case staffings with Peer Mentors to review progress, discuss challenges, and ensure program fidelity.
  6. Maintain documentation of Peer Mentor activities, caseloads, and outcomes for quality assurance and reporting purposes.
  7. Provide individual and group peer mentoring services to incarcerated clients, focusing on recovery, wellness, and reentry preparation.
  8. Collaborate with counselors, case managers, and jail staff to identify client needs and coordinate supportive services.
  9. Assist clients in developing and following individualized wellness and reentry plans, promoting empowerment and personal responsibility.
  10. Facilitate recovery-focused and educational groups as assigned.
  11. Maintain accurate and timely records in electronic health record, including documentation of all peer mentoring activities.
  12. Ensure all client interactions and records comply with federal confidentiality regulations (HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2).
  13. Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, audits, and compliance reviews as requested by the Facility Director or Clinical Supervisor.
  14. Serve as liaison between Mirror’s peer support team and Shawnee County Jail administration, promoting collaboration and communication.
  15. Monitor the quality and consistency of peer mentoring services and make recommendations for program improvement.
  16. Perform additional job-related duties as assigned by the Facility Director or designee.
Qualifications:
  1. High school diploma or General Educational Development certificate.
  2. Be a Kansas Certified Peer Mentor (KCPM) or Kansas Certified Person-Centered Case Manager (PCCM) or eligible to become one.
  3. Completion of the KDADS approved 15-hour training.
  4. Read the BHS Peer Mentor Code of Ethics and sign the statement on the Application affirming adherence to this code and signed affirmation of Merit of Public Trust statement.
  5. Experience in supervising and interacting with persons addicted to drugs or the prison population would be desirable.
  6. Must be proficient in computer skills and/or experience or skills with an Electronic Health Record
  7. Good reading, writing and communication skills.
  8. Ability to organize and prioritize and follow through with multiple tasks related to client charting.
  9. Must be able to pass background checks authorized by the agency.
  10. Employees who have been diagnosed with any type of substance use disorder or behavioral addiction/compulsion must have sustained a minimum of two consecutive years of abstinence from all intoxicating substances and symptoms of their chemical and/or behavioral addiction; and must be in full sustained remission.
  11. Job functions in this position may involve some walking, climbing stairs, bending, lifting (or assisting) up to 40/50 pounds.
  12. If person is a former client of this agency then they need to have been discharged from here for at least 24 months.
