Job Overview
The Minot Daily News is hiring a mailroom supervisor. You will be expected to maintain a professional, highly functional environment while navigating the high-pressure demands of a daily newspaper. This is a hands-on leadership role that requires both independent initiative and the ability to coordinate a diverse team.
Core Responsibilities
- Supervising Inserting Operations: You manage the high speed machines that mechanically tuck advertisements, comics, and special sections into the main newspaper.
- Production Synchronization: You coordinate with the pressroom to ensure that the mailroom staff and machinery are synced with the speed of the printing press.
- Inventory and Supplement Control: You are responsible for receiving and organizing pre-printed inserts from various clients and ensuring they go into the correct editions and commercial print products.
- Machine Maintenance: You oversee the upkeep of conveyors, stackers, and strapping machines to prevent mechanical failures during time sensitive production windows.
- Workforce Scheduling: You manage a team that often consists of part-time, requiring scheduling for Sunday night and second shift.
- Safety Training: You enforce strict safety protocols and OSHA compliance to prevent injuries around heavy moving parts and conveyor systems.
- Performance Monitoring: You track the efficiency of the crew to ensure that the "draw" (the number of papers produced) stays on schedule.
- Loading Dock Management: You oversee the final bundling and palletizing of newspapers.
- Quality Assurance: You conduct regular spot checks to confirm that the newspapers are complete, the print quality is acceptable, and the bundles are secured properly.
