License Required

  • Current Minnesota Special Education license required in one of the following areas: ASD, ABS, SLD, EBD, DD (MMI/MSI).
  • Multiple licenses preferred in ASD, SLD, EBD, DD.
  • Autism Spectrum Disorders licensure preferred.
  • K-6 Elementary Education license preferred for elementary level special education position.

Job Duties And Requirements

  • Administer, evaluate and interpret results of individual assessment instruments/procedures that measure academic achievement and social, emotional, and behavior development; supervise usage of such instruments and procedures in the school district.
  • Coordinate the assessment information gathered and entered from multiple assessment providers into the final Evaluation Report Summary. Assuring compliance with state and federal laws and District expectations includes all initial evaluations and re-evaluations.
  • Provides leadership for the building level special education department.
  • Coordinates and monitors the system for referral including Child Study Team, assessment and service options for students who meet special education criteria.
  • Team with guidance counselor to generate schedules for incomiing students that receive special education services.
  • Primary liaison to District and building level administration including communication with parents in helping to resolve program concerns.
  • Maintains and improves professional skills by participating in building and department meetings, formal coursework, workshops, and seminars in an effort to stay current with best teaching practices.
  • Works in a supportive and collaborative manner with colleagues and supervisors.
  • Participates in a professional learning community on a regular basis.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Primary liaison to District and building level administration including communication with parents in helping to resolve program concerns.
  • Responsible for due process clarification and support for staff at the building(s).
  • Collaborative work in a fast-paced environment interacting with students, staff, administrators, parents, and the community with multiple requests and concerns.
  • Communicates with building principal and District Student Support Services administration regarding special education programming needs and concerns.
  • Support and communicate with other administrators and staff.
  • Respond in emergency situations.
  • Know, interpret, and follow school District policies.
  • Plan and coordinate the work of paraprofessionals.
  • May provide input to the goal-setting process for paraprofessionals.
  • Assist building level teachers and administration in conflict resolution as it relates to special education.
  • Use information provided by special education clerical to ensure that due process is being completed accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Attend district meetings and communicate information from meetings to the special education department.
  • Provide work direction to special education clerical.
  • In the case of re-evaluations the case manager will be responsible for the transition portion of the re-evaluation as well as one observation.
  • First contact for prospective parents.

Knowledge And Skills

  • Excellent conflict resolution skills.
  • Strong knowledge of Due Process and special education procedures.
  • Evidence of strong, positive communication skills (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
  • Demonstrated effective leadership within the special education department, as evidenced by successful experience directly related to the responsibilities of the position.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply appropriate skills in performing daily routines.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate a computer, software and necessary classroom technology.
  • Ability to develop effective and positive working relationships with students, staff, administrators, parents, and the community.
  • Maintain professional composure while dealing with a variety of personalities and situations.
  • Show initiative and function as a self-starter.
