Expand your trial court experience or begin your legal career as a Temporary Judicial Law Clerk/Law Clerk I for the Honorable Reynaldo Aligada, Jr., who is chambered at the Ramsey County Courthouse.  The Law Clerk position offers the opportunity to work within the Minnesota Judicial Branch at the trial court level, and gain insight into judicial and court processes, with a court perspective on the administration of justice.  The Law Clerk works directly with the District Court Judge performing legal research and drafting memoranda and orders. The Law Clerk also performs administrative and courtroom duties.  This position will assist the Judge with the management of a criminal caseload.  The term of employment for this temporary position is June 15, 2020 – August 7, 2020.  Interviews for this position will be conducted remotely at the end of April 2020. 

This is a full-time non-exempt position that is not eligible for benefits. Work is performed primarily in an office or courtroom setting.  Applicants who are hired prior to graduation from an ABA-accredited law school will be hired into the Law Clerk I job classification at $20.41/hour.Job Responsibilities:
  • Assists in the day-to-day management of the Judge's office and maintains the Judge's daily schedule and responds to inquiries.
  • Conducts legal research and prepares written reports, memoranda, orders, and judgments.
  • Prepares various documents related to judicial duties; attends all court sessions and performs court related duties such as recording necessary case information and maintaining records attendant to court proceedings.
  • Ensures that all files, complaints, and other papers are available when needed and in proper order.
  • Performs duties associated with the selection and management of the jury during jury trials; performs courtroom duties including calling calendars, administering oaths, and swearing in jury panels and witnesses.
  • Assists in various court proceedings such as motions, pretrial and trial; performs other administrative and clerical functions as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Juris Doctor from an ABA-accredited law school and/or license to practice law in Minnesota (for Judicial Law Clerk) or current enrollment in an ABA-accredited law school and completion of at least one year of law school by June 15 (for Law Clerk I).
  • Excellent legal research, writing ability, and verbal communication skills.
  • Good computer skills, including knowledge of Westlaw and Microsoft Word or other word processing programs.
  • Ability to organize and manage own work with minimum supervision.
  • Ability to handle a wide variety of tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced courtroom setting, and in chambers.
  • Strong sense of professionalism.
  • Ability to deal professionally and courteously with court personnel, attorneys, the public, and media.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Interest in or experience with criminal law/court.
