This position partners closely with the Building Maintenance Supervisor (BMS) to ensure agency buildings, grounds, mechanical systems, and related infrastructure are safe, functional, and well maintained. Responsibilities include conducting facility and site condition assessments, performing preventative and routine maintenance, and identifying repair and improvement needs.

Working collaboratively with the BMS, this position helps evaluate remodeling and repair projects by developing project specifications, coordinating with contractors, obtaining and reviewing quotes, recommending cost-effective solutions, assisting with contract awards, and inspecting completed work to ensure quality and compliance with project requirements.

In addition, this position supports the development and monitoring of the facility maintenance budget and assists with the day-to-day operation and upkeep of agency facilities, including custodial services, building maintenance, light equipment, and fleet management.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of methods, practices, materials and equipment used in construction and maintenance of buildings.
  • Knowledge of budget preparation and managing expenditures.
  • Experience preparing plans and specifications to prepare estimates of work and materials.
  • Ability to oversee and manage the work of skilled tradesman and those still learning during projects.
  • Computer skills to utilize programs relevant to the position; and functional knowledge and skills to work with technology and equipment needed to perform job duties.
  • Skills to safely operate, maintain, and repair both hand and power tools sufficiently to ensure availability for operation and projects.
  • Ability to maintain records of building inspections, repairs, remodeling, and maintenance.
  • Human relation skills to establish and sustain effective working relationships with other employees, contractors, agency divisions and state architects; ability to use variety of effective strategies in responding to needs in a respectful and professional manner.
  • Experience working with a diverse clientele including the commitment to equity and inclusion in the work environment.
  • Valid MN Driver’s License.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Archibus or another facility management database system.
  • Experience with building automation systems (examples: Facility Explorer, Distech)
  • Leadership experience in a facility involving maintenance.
  • Ability to attend and obtain certification from state of Minnesota Facility Condition Assessment (FCA) & Site Condition Assessment (SCA) training.
  • Hold a Minnesota special engineer boiler license or higher or willingness to obtain within 6 months of employment.

  • Ability to transport oneself to external meetings or obligations.

  • In accordance with the Department of Iron Range Resources & Rehabilitation's Fleet Program, employees driving on agency business who use a rental or state vehicle shall be required to consent to a Motor Vehicle Records check.
