Community Action Team Coordinator

Summary

The MPRB is seeking a dedicated Community Action Team Coordinator to provide culturally competent direct service, intervention, and de-escalation strategies that are focused on safety in response to high-energy and complex community events, occurrences, and prolonged issues within parks. Work includes collaboration at events and in response to incidents while working alongside community members, park users, stakeholders, staff, and Park Police to help solve park safety problems, complementing MPRB’s unique approach to policing parks. This role enacts outreach strategies developed and directed by the Community Action Supervisor that are consistent with MPRB’s mission, values, goals and comprehensive plan.

What You'll Do

• Leverage community connections and engagement strategies for direct interaction with the cities, diverse populations, including coordinating and facilitating, a youth advisory council that provides opportunities for youth to share perspectives, identify community, priorities, and participate in Civic engagement and decision-making.
• Participate in violence-prevention initiatives in parks and neighborhoods to work with youth involved with gangs or other violent behavior to curb youth violence and enable youth conflict management.
• Use knowledge and input gained in the field to collaborate with MPRB staff on strategies to prevent youth and adult violence and crime.
• Serve as a liaison between the Community Connection and Violence Prevention subject matter experts and members of the Minneapolis community, particularly youth.
• Liaise with community and criminal justice partners to deploy resources and develop crime-reduction strategies in communities and neighborhoods disproportionately affected by crime and violence.
• Identify and relay to Supervisor opportunities to establish and maintain positive relationships with neighborhood residents, faith leaders, youth-serving agency staff, and community stakeholders.
• Coordinate violence prevention initiatives in parks and provide positive safe and accessible recreational opportunities that engage youth and strengthen community connections that supports inclusion and safety.

What To Bring

Need to Have:

• Bachelor’s degree in public health, social work, sociology, Criminal Justice, recreation, human services, or closely related field
• Experience working with youth and adults in a public health, community-based, or recreation setting; or work directed at high-risk youth and/or adults; and/or violence prevention: at least three (3) years
• Valid driver’s license and safe driving record
• An equivalent combination of related experience and education and training may be considered.
  • Increasingly responsible experience in youth and adult crisis intervention work: at least eight (8).

• Fluency in a second language

• Community resources and violence prevention strategies.
• Understanding of contemporary urban youth and adult challenges and opportunities.
• Diverse cultures awareness.
• Outstanding customer service principles, practices and standards for diverse customer base.
• Computers and software applications used in business settings and park and recreation work (e.g., word processing, spreadsheets, recreation management software systems, and personnel management software).
• Create positive relationships and work in a collaborative environment, particularly with community groups, multiple agencies, and varying levels of government.
• Work varying hours based on business needs; may include evening, weekend, and day shifts.
• Operate, drive, and transport MPRB equipment, vehicles, and supplies.
• Navigate to addresses and locations within City of Minneapolis and Minneapolis Park System.

Selection Process:

What steps the selection process involves:

• We review your minimum qualifications.
• We rate your training and experience based on application materials and supplemental questions (30%).
• We conduct a structured panel interview (oral exam) (70%).
• We calculate your civil service score based on the above components and place you on the eligible list if all testing components are passed (passing score for each component and as an overall score is 70.00 or above). Eligible list will expire in three (3) months.
• We refer the top finalists to the hiring manager for an interview.
• References, including verification of employment and work performance, may be considered.
• We conduct a background check. Upon receiving a conditional offer of employment, the applicant will be asked to sign an informed consent allowing the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board to obtain their criminal history in connection with the positions sought.
