What are the responsibilities and job description for the Toy Designer position at Minizfigs?
Product Designer – Physical Toys
ABOUT THE POSITION
Turn your ideas into something people can build, play with and enjoy.
At Minizfigs, your work can move from a digital model to a prototype on your desk to a finished toy on retail shelves. We design and manufacture interlocking building sets for retailers, businesses and consumers—and we’re expanding our team and our own Minizfigs product lineup.
We’re looking for a creative, resourceful designer who enjoys figuring out both what a product could be and how to make it work. This is a physical toy design and product development position, combining computer-based design with hands-on building, prototyping, testing and refinement.
We welcome entry-level, mid-level and experienced designers. You might bring an impressive portfolio of school or personal projects, professional product development experience or deep expertise in a particular area. What matters is the quality of your work, your initiative and your ability to contribute.
WHAT YOU COULD HELP CREATE
Designers have different strengths. Some excel at original concepts and visual detail. Others shine at mechanical problem-solving, custom components or making complex assemblies easy to understand. Your responsibilities will reflect your abilities and evolve as we discover where you do your best work.
Projects and responsibilities may include:
- Original product design: Research subjects, explore concepts and develop detailed building sets with appealing proportions, thoughtful features and an enjoyable building experience.
- Digital modeling and revisions: Select parts and refine models for appearance, stability, function, assembly and target cost.
- Custom parts and prototypes: Create or revise CAD models, 3D print components and test their fit and function.
- Building instructions: Develop clear steps, useful viewing angles and logical sequences that help customers build with confidence.
- Physical testing: Build models, investigate weak structures or difficult connections and revise and retest your solutions.
- Production sample review: Check factory samples, colors, printed details and stickers against approved designs and specifications.
- Packaging development and evaluation: Assess boxes, inserts, trays and retail displays for proper structure, sizing, protection and assembly.
- Project follow-through: Maintain accurate parts lists, document changes and collaborate with teammates to move products toward production.
At every experience level, testing, revisions and attention to detail are essential parts of the creative work.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
- Demonstrated CAD or 3D modeling ability applied to physical objects.
- Strong spatial thinking and an understanding of how parts connect, fit and function.
- An eye for detail, proportion and the experience of the person building or using a product.
- Resourcefulness and reasonable independence: you can take an assignment, investigate questions, propose solutions and keep work moving.
- Clear communication, organization and the ability to meet deadlines and incorporate feedback.
- Curiosity and a willingness to explore ideas beyond the obvious solution.
You don’t need to have designed toys professionally or mastered every responsibility listed. You do need a relevant foundation and examples that show what you can do. We use BrickLink Studio and Part Designer; experience with these tools, other CAD software, interlocking building systems or 3D printing is valuable.
WHY MINIZFIGS?
Join a small, growing design team where your contributions are visible and your ideas can influence actual products. Work directly with our designers and founder, explore different parts of development and help shape an expanding toy lineup.
Developing designers can build their skills through meaningful assignments and guidance. Experienced designers can take greater ownership of concepts, development and improvements to how we work.
If you enjoy both coming up with ideas and getting hands-on to make them work, there’s room to make your mark here.
