Crops/Commodities: Cotton, peanuts, corn, wheat, soybeans and pecans. Primary duties (performed the majority of workdays): Assist with the mechanical planting and harvesting of cotton, peanuts, corn, wheat, soybeans and pecans. Cultivate crops. Detassel corn. Walk through fields and pull tassel off plants as directed. Rogue corn and soybeans and remove off-type varieties and other plants using hand tools. Load seed into hoppers. Hand chop and rogue cotton. Load cotton bales. Pick up and load loose cotton. Shovel peanuts onto conveyor. Cover harvested peanuts with tarps. Carry supplies including bags and baling wire to the field. Maintain orchards including pruning and thinning of pecan trees. Perform ditching, shoveling, hoeing, hauling, ground preparation, post-harvest activities and other manual tasks. Lift, carry, and load/unload products or supplies. Drive tractors and balers, and operate other mechanized farm equipment while assisting with planting, cultivating and harvesting activities. Perform manual and mechanized tasks including but not limited to: bush hogging fields; disking; aerating; seeding (using mechanical drills and seeders); fertilizing, weed spraying, mowing, tedding, raking, baling, and stacking. Operate grain carts. Prepare and/or clear land for planting using mechanized or hand equipment to remove trash, rocks, or other debris or material that may interfere with planting or harvesting activities. Manipulate controls to set, activate, and adjust mechanisms on machinery. Adjust speeds of cutters, blowers, and conveyors and height of cutting head. Attach farm implements (e.g., plows, harrows, discs, sprayers) using hand tools. Job opportunity is Skill Level II. Workers must be able to perform all primary duties independently and without close supervision. Secondary duties (performed on less than half of the workdays in the contract period): Install, operate, and maintain levee gates to regulate proper water depth. Install/maintain irrigation systems and water lines. Move and install irrigation pipes and equipment. Dig and maintain ditches. Install and remove levee gates. Apply non-restricted pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and other crop protectants. Apply fertilizers, plant growth chemicals, conditioners, and other plant related treatments at the correct times depending on plant type, growth, climate and crop conditions. Mow, cut, and weed fields. Assist with farm building/field maintenance and cleanup activities. Level land by moving dirt and other materials. Equipment may include tractors, dozers, planters, mowers, plows, sprayers, cultivators, power shears, chainsaws, bobcats, skid loaders, high lifts, and trucks or other vehicles. Clean, adjust, repair, and perform routine service/maintenance on equipment (e.g., lubricating grease points, inspecting and maintaining fluid levels, checking belt and conveyor tensions, and maintaining tires, wheels, bearings, belts, and other wear parts). Repair or replace defective parts. May assist with other general farm maintenance or repairs. Workers must operate all equipment properly and in a manner that protects operator, others, the employer's products and property. Workers may be selected to perform activities listed in the job description based off skills, experience and/or license classification. Only those who meet all necessary qualifications may operate vehicles, tractors or equipment. Qualifications may vary depending on vehicle, tractor or equipment, but can include having a valid driver's license, which is appropriate to the vehicle, doctor's certificate and completion of safety training. Using the employer's vehicles, licensed drivers may transport workers on and off the farm and may be offered additional hours. Allergies to ragweed, goldenrod, honey bees, insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, or related chemicals may affect a worker's ability to perform the job.
