What are the responsibilities and job description for the Kids Coding & Game Design Teacher (Scratch) position at Minds At Play Afterschool?
About the role
Minds At Play is looking for a teacher to lead our afterschool coding class, where kids design and build their own video games in Scratch, MIT's free block-based coding platform. Students drag and snap code blocks together instead of typing code, working in a browser on Chromebooks. Most students are 7 to 11 years old, and each group has no more than 12 kids.
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 2:00–6:00 PM. Days are flexible, so tell us which afternoons you’re available.
Pay: $20–$40/hour, paid weekly by Minds At Play
Location: On-site at 1017 Home St, Bronx, NY 10459
What you'll do
- Lead afternoon sessions of about one hour each
- Teach from our ready-made lesson plans, which give the goal and the Scratch blocks for every session
- Guide up to 12 students by walking the room and asking questions, so they solve their own bugs instead of having you fix them
- End each class with two or three students showing what they built
- Send a short weekly report on attendance and progress, noting who's ahead and who needs help
- Host the end-of-cycle game showcase for families
What we're looking for
- Experience working with kids. This matters most. Classroom, afterschool, camp, tutoring and church programs all count.
- Scratch skills, or willingness to learn it before you start
- Ability to follow a set curriculum and report on progress
- Comfort in a loud, high-energy room
- Spanish is a plus
- NYC Department of Health clearance, which includes fingerprinting. We'll guide you through the process.
Why teach with us
- You pick your afternoons
- Steady weekly hours with your class through the end of the term
- Weekly pay straight from us, with no agency in between
- One Bronx location and one point of contact
- We provide the materials, space and support
- We're open to your own project ideas
Salary : $20 - $40
