What are the responsibilities and job description for the Outdoor Ed Labor - Land Steward position at Milwaukee Public Schools?
Job Summary
We are seeking a hardworking individual to assist with land restoration projects and invasive species removal. ;
Position Summary
- Plant identification of native and non-native/invasive vegetation.
- Treatment of all invasive plant species with minimal or no damage to native species in the area.
- Planting of native forbs, shrubs and trees.
- Perform mechanical and other methods to control non-native/invasive.
- Conduct habitat restoration activities.
- Work with a variety of tools, including but not limited to wheelbarrow, shovel, lopper, handsaw and rake. ;
- Perform trail construction and maintenance.
- Maintain equipment and supplies.
- Demonstrate knowledge of Milwaukee Recreation and Hawthorn Glen rules, policies and procedures.
- Support outdoor education field trips, programs, and special events at Hawthorn Glen.
- Other duties as assigned.
Supervision Required
Reports to Land Steward Coordinator and the Recreation Supervisor of Outdoor Conservation and Animal Care.
Job Requirements
- Be at least 16 years of age.
- Able to meet the scheduling needs for this position.
- Access to reliable transportation.
Preferred Experience
Previous work in stewardship, restoration and/or gardening is preferred, but not required.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- Natural resource knowledge and understanding of Wisconsin¿s native plant communities or a willingness to learn.
- Ability to work outside in a variety of weather conditions and temperatures.
- Ability to work on uneven terrain and slopes.
- Ability to make independent decisions and respond to emergency situations. ;
- Ability to properly utilize personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Ability to safely use land management tools.
- Communication and collaboration skills.
- Display a positive attitude and be a team member. ;
- Must be able to follow directions.
- Willingness to work varied hours and days, occasional evenings and weekends.
Working Environment
This physical work environment includes hiking, bending, lifting at least 50 lbs., carrying, reaching, repetitive motions, and/or working with tools and equipment. Many tasks are performed outdoors in all conditions where ticks, mosquitoes, poison ivy, etc. may occur. ;
