MMSD is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Construction Inspector in the Technical Services Division. Reporting to the Construction Field Manager, you will be responsible for on-site oversight and monitoring of capital/operations & maintenance (O&M) construction contracts to ensure compliance with contract documents and required quality levels. Additionally, you will keep and maintain accurate records of construction progress and report activities to others in accordance with MMSD policies and procedures.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct on-site inspections of various MMSD projects to determine compliance with contract documents, codes, regulations, etc. Alert the construction manager and contractor to conditions and/or activities that do not comply with contract documents or standards.
  • Complete inspection reports and other project required documents and records utilizing construction management software.
  • Ensure contractor compliance and project conformance with plans and specifications
  • Maintain construction progress redline drawings detailing deviations from the contract as originally shown.
  • Communicate with the construction manager regarding contractor daily work activities and project issues.
  • Assist the construction manager with the preparation and processing of contract documentation and deliverables, including submittals, requests for information (RFI), punch lists, O&M manuals, spare parts transfer, contract substantial/final completion, etc.
  • Collaborate with the construction manager in coordination of contractor work activities with ongoing operation and/or maintenance of MMSD assets.
  • Evaluate and observe potential hazards and unsafe conditions. Communicate/coordinate with the construction manager and safety staff in an effort to prevent accidents and unsafe conditions.
  • Communicate accurate project information to all stakeholders, including the general public.
  • Test contractor work by taking concrete cylinders, or other samples, to comprehensively monitor quality of work.
  • Maintain technical competency and remain current with technological changes in the industry.
  • Complete special projects and other duties as assigned.


Qualifications:

  • Associate degree in civil/mechanical/industrial engineering, construction management, or a related field.
  • Two years of job-related experience (advanced education degrees will be considered in lieu of experience).
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to keep accurate and detailed field notes and contribute to detailed technical daily reports and records.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective public and working relations.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and work with contract documents, specifications, and plans.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to apply various construction codes and standards.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of safety rules and regulations to ensure safe completion of construction.
  • Ability to utilize field testing equipment.
  • Confined space entry and CPR certifications (provided by MMSD).
  • Valid driver's license required and a good driving record at time of application, during the selection process, and throughout employment.

Physical Requirements:

  • This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 50 lbs. of force.
  • Work regularly requires speaking or hearing; frequently requires standing and walking; occasionally requires sitting, using hands, climbing or balancing, kneeling or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, smelling, and pushing or pulling.
  • Ability to access a confined space through a 20-inch diameter opening.

Sensory Requirements:

  • Work has standard vision requirements. Vocal communication is required for conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
  • Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, and use of measuring devices.

Environmental Exposures:

  • Work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts and equipment. Work occasionally requires exposure to high/precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, outdoor weather conditions, wet/humid conditions (non-weather), toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold (non-weather), extreme heat (non-weather), risk of electrical shock, explosives, and vibration.
  • Work is generally in a loud noise location.


Requires the use of safety glasses and shoes, hardhat, hearing protection, coveralls, rain gear, self-contained breathing apparatus, gas detector, and self-rescuer as dictated by the location and type of work being performed.
