Description:

This position will interact with all members of our staff as well as many clients and carrier partners. The primary challenges are the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously, lead and develop underwriting staff, communicate effectively with a wide range of personalities and communication styles, and provide strategic underwriting guidance in complex situations.  Training and support are provided both corporately and locally. This position will have minimal travel requirements, if any.  The Underwriter Manager will serve as a technical leader and people manager for the underwriting function. This role is responsible for overseeing underwriting workflows, reviewing and approving complex rating and plan design analyses, mentoring underwriting staff, and ensuring high-quality, timely deliverables to clients.

At Milliman we strive to deliver the best products and services so that people can live for today and plan for tomorrow with confidence. We are looking for someone to partner with us in that mission.

Some of the specific duties are listed below:

  • Prepare, review, and approve rating and plan design quotes within Milliman’s underwriting models
  • Ensure proposals and underwriting analyses are accurate, complete, and delivered on time
  • Oversee the day-to-day workflow of underwriting staff, including prioritization of assignments and quality review of work
  • Mentor, train, and develop underwriting staff to build technical underwriting skills, business judgment, and client communication abilities
  • Collaborate with clients to gather additional information needed for underwriting decisions or to explain underwriting outcomes
  • Coordinate with senior leadership on complex cases, escalated issues, and strategic client situations
  • Provide feedback and recommendations for improvement in rating models, underwriting processes, training programs, and client interaction
  • Establish and reinforce underwriting standards, best practices, and quality control procedures
  • Support hiring, onboarding, and performance management of underwriting staff as needed
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for complex underwriting matters and carrier interactions

Who we are looking for:

  • Trend-setters. Innovation is at the core of our DNA, and that stems from the work ethic of our people. We leverage our experience, client feedback and technology to change the landscape of health insurance with new and extraordinary ideas.
  • Future leaders. We take the time to invest in our people and encourage them to deepen skillsets and broaden abilities. We will always have new opportunities and responsibilities for those who want to assume them.
  • Relationship builders. We are fanatical about serving our customers leading to their success. We are looking for someone with strong communication skills to create dynamic relationships, both internally and externally
  • Confident professionals. We aim for 100% in everything we do, which means being accurate, on-time and on-point for our customer’s needs, while maintaining a professional image consistent with Milliman’s brand.

  • Strong leadership presence with a friendly and engaging personality that enjoys working with a variety of people from across the country
  • Natural attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple team members and project deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Flexibility with a strong customer-first attitude
  • Demonstrated ability to coach, mentor, and develop less experienced underwriting staff
  • Ability to identify process improvement opportunities in underwriting models, workflows, and client service practices
  • Five or more years of health insurance underwriting experience required
  • Prior supervisory, team lead, or management experience strongly preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business or related field
