Job Summary/Basic Function
About the position:
A University Registered Nurse works in collaboration with other Student Affairs Professionals and Academic Departments to enhance students experience and success by promoting health and wellness. The University Nurse is responsible for providing professional nursing services to all eligible students and employees for work related illness/injuries. The University Nurse will need to be autonomous at times and is required to possess the clinical experience to assess, evaluate, treat or refer to a provider as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Nursing Responsibilities include (according to PA code):
- Collects complete and ongoing data to determine nursing care needs.
- Communicate clearly in written records. Is competent in the use of Electronic Health Records.
- Clear verbal communication.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Review Entrance Physicals and follow up on omissions.
- Analyzes the health status of the student and compares this data with norms to determine health care needs.
- Independent assessment of students/employees and formulation of nursing diagnosis.
- Collect specimens and perform lab tests per physician/nurse practitioner order/standing orders.
- Identifies goals and plans for nursing care.
- Differentiate between health concerns that can be addressed at Health Services and those that need referral in collaboration with MD/NP and per standing orders.
- Application of standing orders to meet the health care needs of students.
- Carries out nursing care actions which promote, maintain, and restore the well-being of students.
- Prepare, administer medications and treatments for students as ordered by NP/MD following nursing principles and techniques.
- Involves students in their health promotion, maintenance, and restoration.
- Provide instruction and education to individual students.
- Participate in wellness activities, orientation, and other interdepartmental events.
- Evaluates the effectiveness of the quality of nursing care provided.
- Participates in laboratory proficiency testing, quality control.
- Participates in quality assurance and improvement of services provided.
- Demonstrates sound judgment based on current nursing principles and ethics.
- Participates in continuing education programs to maintain licensure.
Nursing duties in support of the day-to-day operation of Health Services:
- Care of sick/injured students and provide education and health maintenance as described above.
- Receive/Give report on student care to/from other clinical staff as indicated.
- Ability to operate medical equipment and perform laboratory testing accurately (administer oxygen, nebulizer treatments, autoclave instruments, centrifuge, EKG, BP machine, automated urinalysis machine, etc.).
- Follow Bloodborne Pathogen/Hazardous waste policy/procedure.
- Phone communication - triage of incoming calls; making referrals; follow up on labs, x-rays, etc..
- Stock medication/supplies as needed.
- Maintain quality, safety, and cleanliness of equipment/instruments and environment
Participate in Health Service/University programs in support the Millersville University Division of Student Affairs as assigned:
- Orientation.
- Wellness Programming.
- Training resident life staff.
- Training Peer Health Educators.
- Assist in maintaining inventory.
- All other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- One year professional nursing experience.
- Current PA State Board Registered Nursing License .
- Experience doing complete patient assessments.
- CPR & AED certification.
- Experience using electronic medical records.
- Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ethics and confidentiality
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.
- Commitment to inclusive practices and working with diverse student populations.
- Successful interview.
- Successful completion of three background checks.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelors degree.
- Experience in ER, Family Practice, Urgent Care, or College Health.
- Phlebotomy experience.
