Job Summary/Basic Function
FYEX 100 Peer Mentors are student leaders who support first-year students enrolled in FYEX 100 (First Year Experience) courses. Peer Mentors serve as role models, offer academic and social support, and work collaboratively with faculty to foster student engagement, belonging, and success during the transition to university life.
Required Qualifications
- Enrolled as a Millersville University Student
- Recommended by the FYEX 100 Faculty member.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Good communication & organizational skills.
- Ability to engage with other students.
- Must complete 3 required clearances (PA Criminal Background, Child Abuse History, and FBI Fingerprints)
Preferred Qualifications
- Must be a current undergraduate student at Millersville University in good academic and disciplinary standing
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills
- Demonstrated commitment to helping others succeed
- Prior participation in FYEX 100 or a similar transition course is preferred
Job Duties
- Attend and actively participate in assigned FYEX 100 class sessions (typically 1 hour/week for 14 weeks)
- Facilitate small group discussions and activities within class
- Offer guidance and support to first-year students outside of class (approx. 1 hour/week)
- Collaborate regularly with the FYEX 100 instructor
- Attend required training prior to the start of the semester
- Submit reflection forms or brief weekly logs as requested
- Promote campus resources, events, and student success strategies
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
The $300 stipend is based on an estimated 20–25 hours of total work across the semester (approx. 1.5–2 hours/week for 14–15 weeks). This includes:
- Class attendance and participation
- Meeting and communication with students and faculty
- Training and orientation
- Occasional planning or events outside of class time
