Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Safely operate a school bus or other commercial motor vehicle. Observe legal and defensive driving practices. Drive efficiently and courteously on all roadways as directed, in all weather conditions.
  • Treat all passengers, company personnel, and others courteously. Always act professionally.
  • Read and follow route sheet and/or itinerary. Notify dispatch and/or routing to discuss safety concerns, or any issues that may cause unsafe bus stops.
  • Know and apply safe driving techniques and requirements. Have knowledge of limitations and provisions of the DOT regulations, which pertain to the operation of commercial passenger transportation vehicles.
  • Observe and obey posted speed limits.
  • Reports needed mechanical repairs according to Miller policy.
  • Maintains cleanliness of vehicle interior according to Miller policy.
  • Attend mandatory safety trainings and update meetings.
  • Uses only federally compliant devices for outside communication (hands free Bluetooth or radio devices). Does not text or otherwise use a cell phone during the operation of a school bus or other vehicle.
  • Perform scheduled emergency bus evacuation drills.
  • Reports incidents which may affect the safety of children immediately.
  • Transport physically handicapped and mentally handicapped children to and from designated locations; lift and secure wheel chairs; assist in the loading and unloading of handicapped children when necessary.
  • Reports all accidents and injuries to dispatch and safety immediately.
  • Reports promptly to work. Calls to notify dispatcher when unable to drive allowing adequate time for the assignment of a substitute driver.
  • Successfully demonstrates acceptable student management techniques and follows established procedures for reporting student management concerns.
  • Perform Pre-/Post-trip inspections, including interior, and exterior of vehicle including the engine compartment. Complete No Child Left Behind inspection.
  • Maintains a driving record free of all major traffic citations, including no major “at fault” vehicle accidents. Report any moving or seat belt violations in a personal auto to safety immediately.
  • Report any concerns of abuse and/or neglect immediately to appropriate authorities.
  • Perform other work as assigned.

Education and/or Experience:

  • A minimum of 2 years previous experience in passenger transportation or similar field preferred.
  • Must have the ability to read, write, and speak English fluently.
  • Must have High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Must have a valid commercial driver’s license Class A or B with appropriate Passenger & School Bus endorsements . Evidence of a good driving record is required.
  • Must have and maintain a DOT medical card.
  • Must be at least 21 years old.
  • Must possess and exhibit effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be able to drive in various weather conditions.

Physical Demands:

This position is primarily a sedentary position. The work requires the use of hands for grasping, pushing and pulling of arm controls and fine manipulations. The work requires the use of feet for repetitive movements. The work requires occasional bending, squatting, crawling, climbing, reaching, and the ability to carry, push, or pull medium weights. The work requires activities involving being around moving machinery, exposure to marked changes in temperature and humidity, driving automotive equipment, and exposure to dust, fumes, and gases.
