Miller Johnson, one of Michigan’s largest full-service law firms, is seeking an experienced full-time Trademark Paralegal / Practice Group Assistant.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conduct preliminary research (USPTO database, Internet Archive, basic clearance)
- Prepare and file U.S. and state trademark applications, maintenance and other electronic filings, and manage foreign filings (including WIPO/Madrid filings, powers of attorney, and legalization), and assist with related tasks such as assignments, name changes, and other recordations
- Prepare and file routine copyright applications
- Prepare trademark filing estimates and track budgets
- Assist with new client intakes and matter openings, ensuring data accuracy and completeness
- Coordinate with foreign associates regarding filings, deadlines, and required documentation; track incoming communications and ensure timely follow-up
- Manage domestic and international trademark deadlines, including docket maintenance, status checks, report preparation (docket summaries, portfolio reports, and client communications), and prepare routine client correspondence regarding prosecution status, deadlines and official notes
- Support IP attorneys with project coordination, client meetings, and invoice processing
- Contribute to process improvements and workflow efficiencies within the practice group
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- Minimum of 2 years trademark experience
- Mastery of the USPTO’s online tools; experience with WIPO system a plus
- Advanced knowledge and proficiency in docketing software solutions (e.g., PATTSY Wave / Anaqua or similar)
- Advanced knowledge and proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Outlook, and Word)
- Excellent grammar, proofreading, and communication skills
- Knowledge of U.S. trademark rules and procedures
- Exceptional discretion, and judgment to ensure client confidentiality
- Proactive and detail-oriented with strong organizational and time-management skills
- Self-motivated with the ability to be flexible and work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
